UP 900082, the rotary plow that UP keeps and maintains in Cheyenne, departs 36th Street on the point of the WDEDEF-31. The plow will help dig through some snow drifts on the plains to help rescue some crews that are actually trapped on their trains, stuck in the snow. Although the plow itself is powered by diesel-electric, there is still a steam-powered heat system to make sure all the equipment remains defrosted!

This snoot-nose NREX SD40T-2 is ex-Espee 8391. It was sold to National Railway Equipment which proceeded to remove the scarlet red from the unit and put "NREX" is large letters on the long hood.

EMD built and sold 100 SD60's to Oakway Leasing in the mid-1980's. Burlington Northern leased all 100 units on a long-term basis. EMD 9000 to EMD 9099 are still on BNSF's roster twenty years after being delivered. Here, the last of the 100 units, EMD 9099, is seen through the supports for Park Avenue West near the house.

Yard Shots BNSF
When BNSF was first formed in 1995, the new railroad went through several experimental paint schemes while on the path to the eventual Heritage scheme. Most of these experimental or temporary schemes have been replaced. However, BNSF 2911 still wears a rather unique scheme. A slightly off-green paint was used to cover up the old herald and number. The unit is currently assigned as the Golden Switcher.

Even though BNSF starting taking delivery of their Evolution Series GE engines after they introduced their "New Image" scheme, several ES44DC's were still delivered wearing the Heritage 2 scheme. BNSF still had a supply a reflective decals and they wanted to dispose of them by applying them to engines rather than simply throwing them away. BNSF 7728 is one such example.

A few of the ex-Grande units that are still roaming the rails with either their class lights or their MARS lights still intact. Such is the case with UP 1349 which, up until May 16, 2005, was DRGW 3128. On this December morning, the unit was sitting alone on the ready tracks north of the fueling tracks.

One of my favorite paint schemes of all time would be the blue and white scheme applied to the GP59, GP60, and SD60 demo units that EMD produced. A close second is the (very similar) scheme of the 100 "Oakway" SD60 leased to Burlington Northern in the late 1980's. Those units are still on the BNSF today, in relatively good condition!

A very new ES44AC (delivered within the last few months) sits near the shops at BNSF's 38th street engine house. Even though the sun has moved to the opposite side of the unit, I still like the shot, particularly with all the snow in the foreground.

BNSF still has 70 B23-7's on the roster as of the time of this picture. Several of these units seem to have found their way to Denver and are often used in switching service. BNSF 4244 sits near the engine shops at 38th street.

Snow still covers the ground at BNSF's 38th Street shops about 24 hours after snow stopped falling in the Denver area. Not as much power as there sometimes is at the shops, but a nice splattering of color anyway. This shot was taken from the Park Avenue West overpass.

This particular Montana Rail Link SD45 has had quite a few owners over the course of its 35 year history! Built in October 1971, it was delivered as Seaboard Coast Line 2041. Since then, it has been merged or sold to Seaboard System Lines 8941, CSX 8941, VMV 8941, MRL 8941 and IMRL 8941 before finally returning to MRL! At the time of this photos, it was also the highest numbered unit on MRL's roster.

One of the few standard "spartan" cab units thus far to receive BNSF's "New Image" scheme, BNSF 6885 leads the northbound HBARDEN. This same unit was in Denver a year ago (although I didn't get a shot), coming to town on December 8, 2005 on the HBILDEN.

2006 or 1986? This consist certainly looks like it could be straight out of the 1980's with B23-7 #4244, GP28P (ex-GP38-2) #1599, GP39E (ex-GP35) #2926, and GP39M (ex-GP30) #2815. All units are wearing their heritage railroads colors too.

Built in 1973 in London, Ontario, this SD40-2 was sent to the Quebec North Shore & Labrador (QNS&L). It worked on the railroad in Canada until 1999 when it was sold to National Railway Equipment (NREX). On this particular day, it was being leased to BNSF.
