It is actually a huge, extremely powerful vacuum on rails. It is capable of sucking up anything along the right-of-way, up to 15 feet from the center of the rail. It is of used for sucking up old ballast that is going to be replaced. Here, it is being transported to Denver on UP's MGJNY. On this particular trip, only the rails on curves were being ground. The grinder was skipping right over the straight stretches. The worker at the end of the train watches for any fires that might accidentally be started as a result of grinding and extinguishes them with one of the water canons on board.
