A Denver Rock Island switch job is moving to spot some empty box cars at the Waste Management Franklin Street Recycling building. These cars were just delivered to DRIR from Union Pacific a few hours earlier! A cement truck slows on Franklin Street in the distance.

A roster shot of a recent acquisition of the Denver and Rock Island from Nebraska Central. This is, I believe, a former Santa Fe GP7. If anyone has more information on the unit, feel free to leave a comment!

The Denver and Rock Island is a short line railroad in Denver. The railroad has fewer than ten units on the roster, and fewer than ten miles of track! However, the railroad is generally very busy as a lot of customers are located on its rails. Many customers found the DRIR to be more responsive to demand than UP or BNSF. Here, we see a few of the railroads units. DRIR 417 is an NW2. DRIR 88 is a GP9R. DRIR 1083 is an SW1500. The last unit is a recent acquisition from Nebraska Central, and is a GP7.

A pair of UP units slowly back up away from the camera. The train is actually a yard job, transfer cars from UP to the short line Denver and Rock Island. The train is on DRIR tracks right now. After delivering these cars, the UP power will pick up a string of cars ready to depart Denver, and return to North Yard.

A pair of UP GP38-2s sit on a string of cars on Denver and Rock Island trackage right near UP Junction. The two units are waiting for a UP crew to take the cars from the Denver and Rock Island over to North Yard, where UP will forward them on to their final destinations.

Just east of UP Junction, a string of cars sits on Denver and Rock Island track, waiting to transfer over to Union Pacific. Included in the string of cars is an old dome car that has sat in Denver for decades. Its final destination was not known when this shot was taken. It was only know that it was initially headed to North Platte, NE.

Looking west from Ivy Street, you can see the end of the line for this little switcher just east of Holly Street. The switcher is taking a few cars to an industry out here before the switcher starts to head back east.

Denver Rock Island NW2 #996 is busy switching industries on this Friday afternoon in eastern Denver. The switcher crosses west (to the right) over Ivy Street just north of I-70. The NW2 started life as Frisco 259 before turning into Burlington Northern 419. After its life on the BN, it was repainted and wound up in the hands of the DRIR!

The Denver and Rock Island Railroad is definitely the definition of a shortline railroad! The railroad has two switchers (an SW1500 and an NW2) and about three miles of track to its name! However, there are a lot of industries to switch on those three miles. Here, DRIR NW2 #996 switches some cars at Monaco Street, just north of I-70.
