Starting this season, the Rocky Mountaineer is actually loading and unloading passengers on Track 5 at Union Station. Here, the westbound Zephyr is on Track 4, nearly ready to depart. The Rocky Mountaineer is running a few minutes late, but is getting ready to depart as well.

Denver Union Station is just a couple blocks away from Coors Field, home of the Colorado Rockies. In this shot, as the westbound Zephyr is departing from Track 4, the train passes by the stadium. From this vantage point, you can see the grounds crew working on the infield.

As the westbound Zephyr heads out of Union Station, three RTD commuter rail trains are on the roll. On the far left, an A-Line train from Denver International Airport approaches Union Station. It is meeting an N-Line train that is headed out toward Thornton. On the right, above the Zephyr, a G-Line train is arriving from Arvada.

Tried something a little different here, and took a wide shot with the drone. To accomplish this, the drop actually takes 21 pictures and then using internal AI to stitch them together into a wide angle shot. Here, we can see Coors Field, the Denver skyline, and the tracks leading in to Denver Union Station.

Denver Union Terminal (RTD) Rocky Mountaineer
It took a little extra time to get out of the station today, but the Rocky Mountaineer is on the move with RMRX 8020 (a GP40-3) and RMRX 8600 (an SD40M-2) for power. RMRX 8021 is currently in the shop. The Mountaineer does not have trackage rights on BNSF, so it has to the take the long way out of town, heading northeast toward UP's 36th Street Yard, and eventually west across the Belt Industrial Lead.

A pair of UP units slowly back up away from the camera. The train is actually a yard job, transfer cars from UP to the short line Denver and Rock Island. The train is on DRIR tracks right now. After delivering these cars, the UP power will pick up a string of cars ready to depart Denver, and return to North Yard.

Denver Rock Island (DRIR) Denver Rock Island
The Denver and Rock Island is a short line railroad in Denver. The railroad has fewer than ten units on the roster, and fewer than ten miles of track! However, the railroad is generally very busy as a lot of customers are located on its rails. Many customers found the DRIR to be more responsive to demand than UP or BNSF. Here, we see a few of the railroads units. DRIR 417 is an NW2. DRIR 88 is a GP9R. DRIR 1083 is an SW1500. The last unit is a recent acquisition from Nebraska Central, and is a GP7.

A roster shot of a recent acquisition of the Denver and Rock Island from Nebraska Central. This is, I believe, a former Santa Fe GP7. If anyone has more information on the unit, feel free to leave a comment!

The Rocky Mountaineer had to briefly hold on Bypass 1 at C&S Junction to wait on a (somewhat rare) eastbound UP coal load that just arrived on Bypass 2. With the coal train now in the clear, the Mountaineer will shortly be able to continue west.

At C&S Junction, the Rocky Mountaineer proceeds west from Main 1 to Main 2 on a diverging approach signal. The train will stop at the next signal at Arvada to wait for an eastbound oil train. For those versed in identifying which main is which, you might noticed that the head end of the train is still on Main 1 in this shot. The OS at C&S Junction is half a mile long, and the crossover from Main 1 to Main 2 is behind the camera.

After meeting the Rocky Mountaineer at Arvada, this loaded oil train continued east and into Bypass 1 at C&S Junction. The Rocky Mountaineer got out of town just in time, as both Bypass tracks are now plugged with trains. Bypass 2 has a coal train on it (behind the camera). At the time of this photo, there was a new rumor floating around that UP is planning to start running all oil trains through Wyoming and over Soldier Summit, cutting out the Moffat. Time will tell...
