Just north of Boulder, this HPASSAG (with a rather colorful consist) is getting close to the end of its warrant at MP 25. Fortunately, the southbound ahead of this train will roll up its warrant to MP 17, allowing this manifest to continue without stopping through Boulder.

The tracks along the Front Range Sub between Boulder and Longmont definitely move up a down quite a bit! Even though the Longmont Turn is clearly climbing a hill here, overall the tracks are going down an ruling 1.54% grade the rest of the way into Longmont.

Anytime I can get a shot that looks as though it could have been taken in the 1980's (or so), I'll jump at the chance! In this telephoto shot, you can see the Longmont Turn coming down a slight hill just north of Boulder. Foothills Parkway is the overpass just visible in the background.

It seems like more often then not, the Laurel to Denver (HLAUDEN) runs with two C44-9W's on the point and one DPU'd on the back. It's nice when "the norm" is broken every once in awhile...true, they are still all C44-9W's, but at least all three are on the point!

The southbound HLAUDEN is on the approach to Boulder, moving along at 20 MPH. The train is relatively short today, with only 39 cars. This curve is at the south end of the Diagonal, where CO-119 and Foothills Parkway merge. I particularly like the trees along the tracks to the right.

As you are viewing the photo gallery, note this picture as it might be my last from the Boulder siding for quite some time! Six days after this shot was taken, my office (in Boulder) moved to a new office (in Westminster), taking away my need from being in Boulder on a daily basis.

Even though I was hunting trains, this buck came along and was leaving some deer tracks alongside the railroad tracks in Boulder! The buck was casually walking along the tracks westbound, indifferent to my presence.

While waiting for the daily HLAUDEN (Laurel, MT to Denver) manifest in Boulder, I happened to see Bambi's dad come strolling along! The buck seemed indifferent to me - standing about 40 feet away - while munching on some grass.

After securing its train in the clear, the Longmont Turn is about to proceed north (geographically west) to the Boulder siding where it will clear up for a southbound that is currently leaving Longmont. Afterward, the light power will return to Longmont for the day.

With its train secure off the mainline, the light power for the Longmont Turn comes out onto the mainline, the brakeman standing on the ground protecting the switch.

The Longmont Turn has some very new power - three ES44AC's - for switching today. The Turn just finished positioning some Valmont hoppers along the Stazio baseball field complex. Now, the crew is hooking back up to the rest of the train on the mainline.

It is a beautiful fall morning along the Valmont Reservoir in Boulder as the southbound HLAUDEN passes by. The Colorado high country saw as much as two feet of snow the previous weekend, and it shows on the peaks in the background.

I can't stand it when railroads put helper units on the wrong way! True, it is completely irrelevant as far as the operation of the train goes, but I'd prefer to see a cab and not the tail end of a unit as the train is leaving me! Regardless, a single C44-9W helps push on the back of the HLAUDEN as it approaches Boulder with the Flatirons in the background.

The southbound HLAUDEN makes an early run south on the Front Range Sub. The train, just a bit south of 63rd Avenue in northern Boulder, will slow down drastically when it runs through the main parts of Boulder.

Light power came north out of Denver to Boulder to pick up a train that had been tied down on the siding. While the conductor is knocking off the hand brakes, the engineers prepares for the trip north. The lead unit (an ES44DC) sits almost on top of the north siding switch of Boulder.
