As the westbound Zephyr rolls at track speed away from the camera at Crescent, we get nice view of the Continental Divide in the distance, as well as a good view of the dam at Gross Reservoir. Construction on the dam has been ongoing four about four years, as the dam is being raised by over 100 feet, a project that will triple the capacity of Gross Reservoir.

I really like this particular perspective at Crescent, roughly halfway through the siding. The tracks come out of a nice little cut from the east, where the House Track starts. There are several nice (and right now, green) deciduous trees in the area as well.

Near the east end of Crescent, the Zephyr is on the main and moving west at track speed. There are several residences in the area that, if you don't mind living a very rural life, would be quite nice.

The longest Tunnel in the Tunnel District is Tunnel 17, which is 1,752 feet long, or roughly 1/3 of a mile long. The tunnel allows the tracks to leave South Draw, and connect with the open valley at Crescent, near Gross Reservoir. The westbound Zephyr is approach a clear (green) intermediate signal just east of Tunnel 17 on the approach to Crescent.

The westbound Zephyr is deep in the (lower) Tunnel District as the head end emerges from Tunnel 11, while the last few cars on the train are still in Tunnel 10.

With partly cloudy skies, the scene here at Cliff had been fluctuating between brilliant light and muted shade while waiting for this westbound coal empty to arrive. Alas, muted shade ended up being the conditions when it actually arrived. UP 6397 is facing a green signal as the train has picked up some speed, the max authorized speed increasing a bit here at Cliff. UP 6397 started life in scarlet and gray as SP 351 in August of 1995, so it certainly no stranger to the Moffat.

Roughly halfway through the block at Cliff, the main and the siding both cross over South Boulder Creek. Here, the four units on this westbound coal empty are crossing over that exact bridge as they continue west on the main track.

A somewhat rare UP coal empty crosses CO-72 as it heads west on a green signal on the main at Cliff. At this spot, the tracks run between South Boulder Creek and the highway.

This location is something of a classic on the Moffat, as the Zephyr wraps around the tight curve on the approach to Tunnel 29, the shortest tunnel in the Tunnel District at only 75 feet in length. My dad has a shot of the Rio Grande Zephyr, with DRGW 5771 leading, from roughly this same perspective. Note the slight discoloration in the rock by the final Superliner, This used to be Tunnel 28, but was daylights decades ago due to cave-ins.

Deep in the Tunnel District, just west of Tunnel 26, passenger aboard the California Zephyr enjoy the views that only the Zephyr can bring! The train is high above South Boulder Creek, heading toward Tunnel 27.

AMTK 22 and AMTK 126 lead the morning Zephyr, which is running a little over an hour late. The train will lose a little more time as it is following the Rocky Mountaineer. At Rollins, the Zephyr would finally be able to run around the Rocky Mountaineer.

Following closely behind the Rocky Mountaineer, the westbound Zephyr has come to a stop at a red signal at the west end of Crescent. As soon as the Rocky Mountaineer clears the block to the west of Crescent, the Zephyr will get a yellow (Approach) signal, allowing it to continue west as well.

After meeting an eastbound BNSF oil train at Crescent, RMRX 8600 (a former SD45, now an SD40M-2) heads west toward the east portal of Tunnel 19. Off in the distance, you can see Gross Reservoir is indeed growing (getting taller) as part of the project to triple the volume of the reservoir.
