The morning Winter Park Express rolls through a green signal at the east end of Eisele (Clay) on yet another temperature February morning. It is already 45ºF, and it is supposed to be almost 70ºF by this afternoon. Of course, it'll be cooler up at the slopes of Winter Park.

The Winter Park Express is reportedly doing very well this season, despite the relative lack of snow. The State of Colorado increased the subsidization of the train this year, with one-way tickets as low as $9 from Denver to Winter Park (or back) on Thursdays and Fridays. Here, AMTK 170 and AMTK 150 head west out of the west end of Eisele (Clay).

An interesting situation developed came about this morning on the Moffat. There was a bit of congestion, with three westbound and two eastbound trains on the hill this morning, DS-378 had to get a little creative. The Winter Park Express entered the siding at Rollins behind BNSF's Denver-Provo, also in the siding ahead. Both trains met an eastbound UP coal load, seen here. After the coal load was clear, the Winter Park Express backed out the east end of Rollins, and continued west.

It is a little difficult to see, but there are actually three trains in this shot. Off toward the west end of Rollins, there is a BNSF Denver-Provo. The Winter Park Express is stopped here toward the east end of the siding. Meanwhile, a coal load rolls east on the main. After clearing Rollins, the Winter Park Express will back out of the siding and proceed west around the Denver-Provo.

The westbound Winter Park Express waits in the siding at Rollins, toward the east end, as the sole DPU on an eastbound coal train rolls by. After the coal train is clear, the Winter Park Express will back out the east end and then proceed west on the main track, around a BNSF manifest that is out of view toward the west end of the siding.

After some clever dispatching at Rollins, in which the Winter Park Express ducked into the siding behind this BNSF Denver-Provo to allow a UP coal train to proceed east, it is now the Winter Park Express's turn to head west. The WPE backed out the east end of the siding of Rollins and is now headed west on the main, around the Denver-Provo.

An eastbound BNSF oil load, with a trio of elephant-style SD70ACes, rolls slowly east in the siding at Tolland. The train just met the Winter Park Express, and is now slowing at a red signal at the east end and will meet a westbound UP oil empty here.

A westbound Union Pacific empty oil train heads west on the main at Tolland, meeting an eastbound BNSF loaded oil train that is waiting in the siding. The Winter Park Express ran around the UP oil train at Cliff. After meeting a coal load at Cliff, it was the oil trains turn to continue west.

The crew on this BNSF manifest has been stuck here at Rollins for several hours at this point. They met an eastbound coal load, then had the Winter Park Express and a UP oil empty run west around them. Now, they are waiting on an eastbound BNSF oil load. Then, it should finally be their turn to continue west to Tolland to let the westbound Zephyr run around it.

A BNSF loaded BNSF oil train, which loaded in Utah at Wash, just east of Price, heads east on the main between Tolland and Rollins. With all the maintenance UP has sunk into the Moffat in that past six months, there are no track-related slow orders and trains are moving along at track speed.

An eastbound loaded oil train crosses over East Portal Road just west of the west switch of Rollins. You can see the ice and snow covering South Boulder Creek. About the only snow there seems to be up here. One of the driest (and warmest) winters we've had in decades here in Colorado.

A pretty colorful Zephyr heads west this morning! AMTK 164, the Phase 4 heritage unit and AMTK 69, sporting Phase 7, are on the point of the train. Interesting, there is no baggage car on the train this morning. That happens from time-to-time, particularly if a few cars are down for maintenance.
