After receiving a new track warrant (via PTC), BNSF 6212 is rolling toward the south siding switch of Longs Peak. The train will continue south to Broomfield where it will meet two northbounds. BNSF 5207 is the sole DPU on a northbound vehicle train currently tied down on the main at Longs Peak. The train hit a car the previous night and maintenance is working on the lead unit on the other end. Note the blue flag attached to the rail on the main. This provides "blue flag protection" for the maintenance crew, ensuring the train is not allowed to move.

The huge blades that you see on the power-generating wind mills are typically transported from the manufacturing plant to (near) their destination via rail. The rails are generally not close enough to the final destination, so the blades are usually transferred to truck.

BNSF pretty consistently runs oil trains in a 3x(0)x3 configuration on the Moffat, and this train is no example. A trio of units bring up the rear of the train as it rolls east out the east end of Crescent. In the distance, you can just spy the plains through Elderado Canyon.

Second out on this eastbound BNSF oil load is a Kansas City Southern de Mexico ES44AC. BNSF seems to lease KCS and KCSM units somewhat often as it is not super uncommon to catch one of these guys on a BNSF train in Colorado.

An loaded BNSF oil train crosses the grade crossing at Crescent, rolling eastbound on the main. The train will meet a westbound oil empty at Plain. The westbound is actually already at Plain, awaiting the arrival of this eastbound.

There is no train in the shot, but the shot was taken from a train! We are looking northeast over some low-hanging clouds. Just one example of the incredible views to be had from riding any passenger train through the Rockies.

Just west of Tunnel 8, we look off the Winter Park Express at some cloud hanging low in Elderado Canyon amidst frosty pine trees.

Amtrak's sightseer/lounge cars on long distance trains typically have half the car setup with tables, and half the car setup with seats the face out to watch the scenery. However, for the Winter Park Express, the car is reconfigured with tables. This makes a lot of sense for the train as most passengers here are looking for a place to sit and eat on the way to or from the slopes, rather than just sit and look out at the scenery, which is common on long distance trains.

Just at the east portal of Tunnel 19, the westbound Zephyr crosses over a fill and prepares to start the upper end of the Tunnel District. In the distance, construction continues on the dam at Gross Reservoir. The dam is being raised by 131 feet to triple the capacity of the reservoir.

Looking over the top of Tunnel 8, we see the westbound Zephyr as it makes its way through what was once Tunnel 9. This tunnel was daylight decades ago, but the other tunnels were never renumbered. You can see the east portal of Tunnel 10 ahead, the next tunnel the Zephyr will actually pass through.

The pair of P42DCs leading the westbound Zephyr this morning kick up a bit of exhaust as the train emerges from Tunnel 7. This relatively short tunnel is the last tunnel from which a view of the plains is possible from both ends of the tunnel. Just ahead, the train will enter Tunnel 8 and curve into South Boulder Canyon.

Military trains are quite uncommon on the Moffat. In fact, prior to this train snaking its way along South Boulder Creek through Tunnel 29, the last such train was in June 2017! After arriving in Denver, one unit will be cut off from the head end and the train will continue east on the KP.
