The "newest of the new" leads this southbound manifest on Main 1 at Castle Rock. BNSF 3881 is a Tier-4 compliant ET44C4. A pair of ES44C4s follow up behind. Fourth out is a Utah Railway MK50-3 which is Dead In Consist (DIC), being transported to the KYLE Railroad by BNSF.

This scene has changed somewhat in the last seven years or so. As Castle Rock has continued to grow, the city wanted to connect the west side with the east side. The solution was to build Plum Creek Parkway. Prior to 2010, the bridge in this shot did not exist. It was simply hillside!

A southbound BNSF manifest pulls up the grade on Main 1 over Plum Creek Parkway. The fourth unit is Utah Railway 5005, an MK50-3, which is being sent to the KYLE Railroad in eastern Colorado.

It's pretty unusual to catch a UP coal train on the Joint Line these days. UP puts sufficient power on its coal trains to make descent speed up the hill to Palmer Lake. Which is why it was fortunate that this train was on the tail of a BNSF load that was dragging up the hill.

The symmetry of a Unit Grain train is one of the things that makes it a lot of fun to shoot! With the sun finally coming out from behind the clouds, this grain empty passes south past milepost 35.40 on Main 1.

A southbound "Earthworm" is heading south along I-25 just south of Castle Rock. I caught two trains on the Joint Line on this day and, to my amazement, neither was a coal train! Crazy how much Castle Rock has grown in the past decade.

The sun is playing hide and seek behind the clouds as BNSF's Denver, CO to Amarillo, TX manifest comes around the curve south of Castle Rock. The train had some interesting power with a pair of Norfolk Southern units on the point. The second unit was (obviously) Conrail, but is now on Norfolk Southern's roster!

A BNSF southbound without a BNSF unit in sight. Heck, there's not even a unit from a western railroad in sight! BNSF's Denver, CO to Amarillo, TX is making good time on the approach to Castle Rock.

Holy cow! Here is something that seems like it has become increasingly rare on the Joint Line. A non-coal UP train! Or heck, any UP train for that matter. These days, the Joint Line is pretty much dominated by BNSF. UP does run daily manifests between Denver and Pueblo, but they run overnight in the dark. This auto train is all empty as the racks are being repositioned. The racks were pulled from the auto facility at Rolla, CO and are headed for Arlington, TX.

A wide angle shot with a polarizing filter makes for a nice view of this southbound coal train running on Main 1 along I-25. Note the new interchange with Plumb Creek Parkway that was recently built. Castle Rock's namesake rock stands in the distance.

In order to accommodate Plum Creek Parkway continuing west of I-25, a new bridge was recently built for Main 1. Prior to the construction of the bridge, the tracks ran along a fill all the way through this picture!

Not too hard to tell where this train is! The rock, towering like a castle, kind of gives it away. A pair of CP SD40-2s and a SOO SD60 lead a southbound BNSF manifest along its way on the Joint Line.

After two significant snow storms in the past week, this particular Sunday was absolutely beautiful! Just north of Tomah Road, this southbound BNSF coal load is on the move under the care of an SD70MAC and an SD70ACe for power.

A trio of SD70-series units (two SD70MACs and an SD70ACe) bring up the rear of this southbound coal load on the Joint Line (Main One) south of Castle Rock. The SD70MACs are DPU units controlled by the head end, while the SD70ACe is a manned unit that was added at Big Lift (just south of Denver). The extra unit will help push up to Palmer Lake, and then cut off and return to Big Lift.
