One of the units being donated to the Railroading Heritage of Midwest America museum by UP is Chicago Northwestern F7A #401. Two of its sister units, 402 and 403, were sold to the Royal Gorge Route Railroad in Canon City, CO. 401 was not lucky enough to be included in that deal, and so here it rolls east on the Sidney Sub.

UPB 966 has seen better days! This is an E9B that was originally UP, then sold to Amtrak when Amtrak was first formed. Once Amtrak received newer equipment, it was sold back to UP where it was stored at the roundhouse in Cheyenne and used for parts for the operable E9s UP still has on the heritage fleet. It appears that no more cannibalism is possible as it is being donated to the Railroading Heritage of Midwest America museum in Silvas, IL.

One of the smaller donations UP is making to the Railroading Heritage of Midwest America museum in Silvas, IL is classic UP caboose UP 25740. Hopefully, it'll find a happy home in Silvas.

UP 6936 is one of 47 DDA40X produced between 1969 and 1971 by EMD. It is the largest diesel locomotive ever built, weighing in at roughly 270 tons. It has four axles on each of its two trucks and has two prime movers. Alas, after just over 50 years of UP ownership, it is now being donated to the Railroading Heritage of Midwest America museum in Silvas, IL.

UP 5511 is the only-remaining 2-10-2 "Santa Fe" type steam engine in existence. It has sat at UP's roundhouse in Cheyenne for decades, but UP never ended up investing in a restoration project for it. Now, it is headed east to be donated to the Railroading Heritage of Midwest America museum in Silvas, IL. The museum says they eventually plan to restore it to operational condition.

A 3/4 roster shot look at UP 3985. It last ran in September 2010 when it actually led the (now defunct) Circus Train down the Greeley Sub to Denver from Cheyenne. Since then...and in particular since UP sunk its efforts in to restoring UP 4014...the old gal has sat in Cheyenne. Now, it is off to the Railroading Heritage of Midwest America museum as part of a donation from UP.

UP 5716 leads UP 3985, UP 5511, and (hospital) train east through Archer Curve on the journey east. Most likely the very last time that either of these steam engines will traverse these rails. Neither steam engine, as is pretty obvious, was under steam here.

A trio of elephant-style GEs leads a westbound manifest toward on Main 1 from Archer toward Archer Curve on a beautiful Veteran's Day. It is a bit chilly at 33°F (1°C) and sustained winds of about 15 MPH (24 KPH).

Being a diesel brat, I was particularly sad to see that UP is getting rid of UP 6936, a DDA40X and largest diesel locomotive ever produced. It has been inoperable since 2017, and it appears UP no longer wishes to deal with its mechanical issues. Fortunately, the Railroading Heritage of Midwest America museum has said they intend to repair it and bring it back to operational condition.

UP 3985, the 4-6-6-4 Challenger steam engine has been sitting in the roundhouse in Cheyenne, inoperable, since 2010. Many people speculated that UP's restoration of 4014, the Big Boy, might spell the end of the Challengers time on UP's roster. Turns out that has prove to be true as it is on it's way to it's new home with the Railroading Heritage of Midwest America museum in Silvas, IL.

UP 5716 leads an eastbound hospital train toward the east end of the yard in Cheyenne. The term "hospital train" is given to a train whose purpose is to move equipment off the property for the last time. Many such items are leaving the UP on this train as UP has donated a lot of equipment to the Railroading Heritage of Midwest America museum in Silvas, IL. First up behind UP 5716 is UP 3985, the 4-6-6-4 Challenger steam locomotive.

UP worked with ALCO to design and create the 4-8-8-4 Big Boy in the early 1940s to run on trains between Green River, WY and Ogden, UT without having to "double head" (run two steam engines instead of one) the trains. 25 Big Boys were built and delivered between 1941 and 1944 and they ran in service until 1959. After starting between Green River, WY and Ogden, UT, they were later moved to Cheyenne and ran on trains primarily between Cheyenne, WY and Laramie, WY over Sherman Hill. 60 years after leaving service, UP 4014 steams again as it departs west with a special to head toward Sherman Hill.

After spending nearly five years being rebuilt by the UP Steam Team, the largest steam locomotive in the world leads a westbound passenger train out of Cheyenne on a two month system tour. It is shortly after 8am and the train will run on Main 3 between Cheyenne and Laramie. (Main 2 through Hermosa Tunnel).
