Yard Shots Union Pacific
One final shot of the Big Boy with its train as they back down and into the yard at Cheyenne. After two months on the road, UP 4014 is back at home base to rest before the next trip, whenever that may be. Over the course of two months, the train visited ten states including Arkansas, Colorado, Illinois, Iowa, Kansas, Missouri, Nebraska, Oklahoma, Texas, and Wyoming.

UP 4014 and train are now clear of all main tracks as they back down "the old way" toward the Cheyenne Yard. In the yard, the freight cars will be dropped off before the passenger cars placed on their storage track and the Big Boy is taken to the roundhouse.

One last close up profile shot of UP 4014 as it backs off Main 4 and into the Cheyenne Yard via "the old way". The steam crew will put the old gal in the round house and shut her down, likely for the rest of 2024. After two months on the road, there is likely some upkeep that will be necessary before the next tour, hopefully in 2025.

A look down from BNSF's Front Range Sub at UP 4014 and train, backing off Main 4 and into the west end of the Cheyenne Yard. UP's tracks were here in Cheyenne before the C&S Line, meaning the C&S Line had to climb a fill to use a bridge to cross over UP's transcontinental mainline.

If only there had been a BNSF train crossing above right at this point! Indeed, the bridge does carry BNSF's Front Range Subdivision across UP's (far busier) Laramie Subdivision on the west side of Cheyenne. UP 4014 and train are backing up on Main 4 to enter the yard through "the old way" to complete their day and their tour for 2024.

UP 4014 and train are backing up into the yard at Cheyenne at the conclusion of the Heartland Tour for 2024. The grade crossing at Southwest Drive is a pretty popular spot for railfans (and, in particular steam fans) to stop for some shots, and today is no exception. The train is on Main 4 as is back underneath the signal bridge at CP W511.

At the west end of Cheyenne, a westbound coal load that originated in the Powder River Basin is on Main 3, passing underneath BNSF's Front Range Subdivision. The train will take Main 3 from Speer Jct to Dale Creek Jct. Main 3 follows a completely different alignment from Mains 1 and 2, and heavier trains are often west on Main 3.

One of the units being donated to the Railroading Heritage of Midwest America museum by UP is Chicago Northwestern F7A #401. Two of its sister units, 402 and 403, were sold to the Royal Gorge Route Railroad in Canon City, CO. 401 was not lucky enough to be included in that deal, and so here it rolls east on the Sidney Sub.

UPB 966 has seen better days! This is an E9B that was originally UP, then sold to Amtrak when Amtrak was first formed. Once Amtrak received newer equipment, it was sold back to UP where it was stored at the roundhouse in Cheyenne and used for parts for the operable E9s UP still has on the heritage fleet. It appears that no more cannibalism is possible as it is being donated to the Railroading Heritage of Midwest America museum in Silvas, IL.

One of the smaller donations UP is making to the Railroading Heritage of Midwest America museum in Silvas, IL is classic UP caboose UP 25740. Hopefully, it'll find a happy home in Silvas.

UP 6936 is one of 47 DDA40X produced between 1969 and 1971 by EMD. It is the largest diesel locomotive ever built, weighing in at roughly 270 tons. It has four axles on each of its two trucks and has two prime movers. Alas, after just over 50 years of UP ownership, it is now being donated to the Railroading Heritage of Midwest America museum in Silvas, IL.

UP 5511 is the only-remaining 2-10-2 "Santa Fe" type steam engine in existence. It has sat at UP's roundhouse in Cheyenne for decades, but UP never ended up investing in a restoration project for it. Now, it is headed east to be donated to the Railroading Heritage of Midwest America museum in Silvas, IL. The museum says they eventually plan to restore it to operational condition.

A 3/4 roster shot look at UP 3985. It last ran in September 2010 when it actually led the (now defunct) Circus Train down the Greeley Sub to Denver from Cheyenne. Since then...and in particular since UP sunk its efforts in to restoring UP 4014...the old gal has sat in Cheyenne. Now, it is off to the Railroading Heritage of Midwest America museum as part of a donation from UP.

UP 5716 leads UP 3985, UP 5511, and (hospital) train east through Archer Curve on the journey east. Most likely the very last time that either of these steam engines will traverse these rails. Neither steam engine, as is pretty obvious, was under steam here.

A trio of elephant-style GEs leads a westbound manifest toward on Main 1 from Archer toward Archer Curve on a beautiful Veteran's Day. It is a bit chilly at 33°F (1°C) and sustained winds of about 15 MPH (24 KPH).
