Riding in style! These passengers have been sitting on the open vestibule for most of the trip from Denver up to Cheyenne. Not that I blame them...that is likely exactly where I'd be sitting as well if I were on the train.

We are about four miles north of the Colorado/Wyoming border as the Front Range Explorer glides by on the main track at Speer. In the distance, you can just see a few cars on I-25, which the train just passed beneath.

Now in Wyoming, the Front Range Explorer pulls through the south switch of Speer. This siding is relatively short and seldomly used. In the distance, you can see tracks on a bridge. This is UP's Greeley Sub, which the BNSF Front Range Sub crosses underneath.

A westbound ballast train pulls out of the Cheyenne Yard, ready to head west on the Laramie Sub. The train is on Main 4, crossing underneath the BNSF Front Range Sub. The train is on Main 4 because it will actually swing south and go through Speer Junction before heading west on Main 3 to Dale Jct. Main 3 is on a totally separate grade from Mains 1 and 2 between Cheyenne and Dale Jct (near Hermosa Tunnel). Main 3 is longer, but the grade is much lower, so heavy westbounds, such as this ballast train, frequently take Main 3.

The journey is almost over! It has been a beautiful ride for passengers on Cheyenne Frontier Days, but the (morning) ride is nearly over. The train just received permission to enter "Form B" limits at Cheyenne and will cross over from Main 4 to Main 1 at CP W511. A "Form B" is a special form that allows train maintenance to occur on the tracks. No train can enter (or, once coming to a stop, move within) Form B limits without explicit verbal consent from the track foreman in charge.

Old meets new! On the right side of this picture, we find a trio of SD70s (an SD70ACe sandwiched by two SD70Ms) on a train stopped on Main 1. The power on that train is all from the 21st century. Meanwhile, on the left side of the picture, we have a trio of E9s (an E9B sandwiched, of course, by two E9As) and a DDA40X. The E9s haven't seen revenue service since the 1950s! The DDA40X is only slightly more recent, last seeing revenue service in the 1970s.

The E-unit and the DDA40X on Cheyenne Frontier Days are "home". When not in use, they are typically kept and maintained in Cheyenne at the roundhouse. You may have noticed that there is no nose door on UP 951. UP welded it shut and painted over the seams a few years ago.

The Cheyenne Frontier Days Special is closing in on its destination! The train is currently on Main 4 and approaching CP W511 at the west end of Cheyenne. At CP W511, the train will cross over all the way from Main 4 to Main 1 and pull in to the Cheyenne Depot to allow its passengers to detrain.

In Cheyenne, BNSF's north/south Front Range Subdivision crosses over UP's Overland Route. A BNSF Coal empty is approaching the BNSF yard (the train is ultimately headed for the Powder River Basin in northern Wyoming) while all four UP main tracks currently lie empty and quiet.

A 500mm shot of the Southern Heritage Unit (NS 8099). It is sitting in the yard at Cheyenne, awaiting its next assignment. At least it wasn't entirely obstructed! I'll take a long, slightly awkward angle over no shot at all.

One of Norfolk Southern's 20 heritage units (NS 8099, the Southern Heritage Unit) has been spending some time on the left side of the country! It came to Cheyenne on the HLAUDEN (Laurel, MT to Denver, CO) manifest and was pulled off in the yard at Cheyenne. It was not in a particularly accessible location, so this was about the best shot I could get.

This was the right way to wrap up a fantastic weekend trip with my dad! Literally 10 minutes prior to the sun setting, this manifest passed by heading east. An hour earlier, Cheyenne was pummeled by a torrential downpour that included nickel-to-quarter sized hail. That, however, result in the formation of this fantastic pond, allowing for a nice capture of an SD70ACe and an SD70M, both sporting the American flag.

After receiving a fresh crew at Speer, WY, the ZLADV (high priority intermodal from Los Angeles to Denver) is heading south, pulling out of Speer. The auto racks on the point are actually crossing over BNSF's Front Range Sub just around the corner of the hill.
