A northbound UP local slows to a stop at a red signal at Sand Creek. It's path is currently blocked by a westbound BNSF coal load, crossing over the diamond at Sand Creek on the BNSF Brush Sub, underneath the I-270 overpass. Once the coal load clear, the local will still have to wait a bit as a southbound UP manifest switches some cars out at an industry off in the distance.

A westbound BNSF coal load has crosses UP's Greeley Sub at the diamond at Sand Creek, and is now passing the Suncor oil refinery in Commerce City. This is definitely one of the most industrial parts of Denver.

UP's MNPDV (North Platte to Denver 36th Street Yard manifest) crosses an irrigation ditch that is filled near the brim as it heads south on the main. This irrigation ditch branches off from the South Platte River and ultimate feeds in to Barr Lake along I-76.

Just past the intermediate south of Rolla, CN 2724 and train start to pull south on UP's Greeley Sub mainline. The train has just dropped off a string of autoracks at Rolla, UP's auto transload facility in Denver.

I was unable to find the history of this little SW1500. It is now owned by L.G. Everist, a company that deals with construction aggregates like sand and cement, as well as things like asphalt. Here, the switcher is moving some cars around alongside UP's Greeley Sub mainline.

After spotting a reverse move of seven light units to a strand of auto racks, the conductor climbs off the units to knock the brakes off the auto racks and give them a quick inspection. Then, the train will make another reverse move (across a grade crossing) to connect the train in preparation for departure north.

Hello old friend! Hard to believe UP's heritage units have been around long enough to now be referred to as "old friend". UP 1989 was unveiled at North Yard in Denver nearly 17 years ago (as of this photo). Other than a pretty good layer of dirt, the unit is looking pretty good, considering its age!

Always great to find the Rio Grande logo in 2023. Even better to find it on the long hood of a locomotive! In this case, we are of course referring to the Rio Grande heritage unit, UP 1989.

The Missouri-Kansas-Texas railroad was a Class 1 that formed in 1865. In the 1890s, the railroad primarily operated in Kansas and Texas, resulting in the abbreviation "K-T" or "KT" be used. It didn't take long for the nickname "The Katy" to be adopted by the railroad. A nickname that the railroad continued to use up until it was merged in to Union Pacific in 1988.

UP 1988, the Katy (Missouri-Kansas-Texas) heritage unit, will always be a somewhat special one for me as it was the very first heritage unit I ever had the pleasure of seeing in person. It happened to be in Denver in September 2005, just a month after being unveiled, and I was able to find it. On this day, it is the second unit on a northbound empty auto rack train heading for Laredo, TX.

Seven light units, including two of UP's six heritage units (UP 1988 and UP 1989) prepare to knock down a clear (green) signal at the south end of Hazeltine. The south end of Hazeltine is actually a crossover. However, south of the control point on what would be the siding, there is no occupancy and the track serves as a lead in to the Rolla auto facility. The trailing unit, UP 6385, was once SP 339!

Seven light units head north out of Denver on UP's Greeley Subdivision. The units are headed to the first siding north of Denver on the Greeley Sub, the siding of Hazeltine. A string of auto racks is tied down in the siding and these units will pick up the string of cars and take them to Laredo, TX.

The unit second out on this special unit covered hopper train tied down in the siding at Barr is a unit we don't see too often in Colorado. This is an SD70M-2, the DC-version of its far-more-common brother, the SD70ACe. Neither BNSF nor UP have an SD70M-2s on the roster, which is why it is a rather rare catch in Colorado.

A train made up of short covered hoppers sits tied down in the siding at Barr. The "special" unit train was delivered to the BNSF by Canadian National in Enola, IL. It is currently awaiting a recrew to take the train to Ft Collins, its final destination (at least on BNSF).
