Seven light units, including two of UP's six heritage units (UP 1988 and UP 1989) prepare to knock down a clear (green) signal at the south end of Hazeltine. The south end of Hazeltine is actually a crossover. However, south of the control point on what would be the siding, there is no occupancy and the track serves as a lead in to the Rolla auto facility. The trailing unit, UP 6385, was once SP 339!

Seven light units head north out of Denver on UP's Greeley Subdivision. The units are headed to the first siding north of Denver on the Greeley Sub, the siding of Hazeltine. A string of auto racks is tied down in the siding and these units will pick up the string of cars and take them to Laredo, TX.

The unit second out on this special unit covered hopper train tied down in the siding at Barr is a unit we don't see too often in Colorado. This is an SD70M-2, the DC-version of its far-more-common brother, the SD70ACe. Neither BNSF nor UP have an SD70M-2s on the roster, which is why it is a rather rare catch in Colorado.

A train made up of short covered hoppers sits tied down in the siding at Barr. The "special" unit train was delivered to the BNSF by Canadian National in Enola, IL. It is currently awaiting a recrew to take the train to Ft Collins, its final destination (at least on BNSF).

A pair of SD70ACes lead a power river coal load east on the main track at Irondale. While coal has all but disappeared from the Moffat, coal is still flowing regularly from the power river in Wyoming, down the Brush Sub to the Joint Line. Upon reaching Denver, this southbound train will tie down at South Denver to wait for a recrew.

Sand Creek is an interesting and somewhat busy spot train spot in Denver. BNSF's Brush Sub and UP's Greeley Sub cross (at grade) here, and there are quite a few industries that get switched out by both railroads. A BNSF coal load, led by BNSF 6017, passes by the grain elevator on the BNSF side. The white hopper cars (and beyond) on the other side of the elevator are all under UP's control.

Unfortunately, this year's Cheyenne Frontier Days steam train ended in tragedy. The train struck a pedestrian at 124th Avenue in Commerce City. I was at 120th Avenue, four blocks to the south. The crew made an emergency call to DS86 to report the incident. The train came to a stop and first responders were there almost immediately. I left and headed home right after this quick shot showing a cop arriving on scene, having a bit of a hard time keeping it together on the car ride. Nothing but prayers for the family involved and the steam crew onboard UP 844. The train remained stopped for nearly four hours as police investigated. Passengers on the train were taken off at the scene and loaded onto busses for the remainder of the trip in to town.

UP 844 and UP 1943 lead the northbound Cheyenne Frontier Days train at Hazeltine. UP 1943 was the diesel unit chosen to give an assist to UP 844 this year. A diesel engine is always added to help maintain track speed and offer some dynamics on the downhill stretches.

Cheyenne Frontier Days is here once again! UP 844 was once again on the point of the train, making the 100 mile trip from Denver to Cheyenne. Here, the train is at Hazeltine, running on clear signals. Engineer Ed Dickens looks ahead out the window.

This SD40-2 has some interesting equipment added to its roof. It appears as though it may be related to the remote control capabilities of the unit. No doubt this unit will be used as a yard switcher either at 38th Street or Rennicks.

It sure is great that, in 2017, there is still a large number of Warbonnets that are really in very good condition, considering the age of their paint. BNSF 784 is one such example on this westbound manifest.

I couldn't resist a final roster shot of UP 1989 as it departs with UP 844 north toward Cheyenne. It had been five years (and five days) since I last shot it and who knows how long it'll be before it finds its way through town again.

A final shot of UP 844 and crew as they depart Denver for the journey north to Cheyenne, passing by the Suncor Oil Refinery in Commerce City. Here's hoping that, post-rebuild, the 8-4-8 will have many excursions in the not-too-distant future.
