Hard to believe UP's heritage units have been around long enough to now be referred to as "old friend". UP 1989 was unveiled at North Yard in Denver nearly 17 years ago (as of this photo). In the 1890s, the railroad primarily operated in Kansas and Texas, resulting in the abbreviation "K-T" or "KT" be used. It didn't take long for the nickname "The Katy" to be adopted by the railroad. It happened to be in Denver in September 2005, just a month after being unveiled, and I was able to find it. The south end of Hazeltine is actually a crossover. However, south of the control point on what would be the siding, there is no occupancy and the track serves as a lead in to the Rolla auto facility. The trailing unit, UP 6385, was once SP 339! The units are headed to the first siding north of Denver on the Greeley Sub, the siding of Hazeltine. A string of auto racks is tied down in the siding and these units will pick up the string of cars and take them to Laredo, TX. This is an SD70M-2, the DC-version of its far-more-common brother, the SD70ACe. Neither BNSF nor UP have an SD70M-2s on the roster, which is why it is a rather rare catch in Colorado. The "special" unit train was delivered to the BNSF by Canadian National in Enola, IL. It is currently awaiting a recrew to take the train to Ft Collins, its final destination (at least on BNSF). While coal has all but disappeared from the Moffat, coal is still flowing regularly from the power river in Wyoming, down the Brush Sub to the Joint Line. BNSF's Brush Sub and UP's Greeley Sub cross (at grade) here, and there are quite a few industries that get switched out by both railroads. A BNSF coal load, led by BNSF 6017, passes by the grain elevator on the BNSF side. The white hopper cars (and beyond) on the other side of the elevator are all under UP's control. Photo ID: 107652 Date Shot Photo By Saturday, July 21, 2018 Kevin Morgan Location Times Viewed North of Hazeltine Commerce City, CO 1682 (Add a Comment) Subdivision Railroad Greeley (UP) Union Pacific Unfortunately, this year's Cheyenne Frontier Days steam train ended in tragedy. The train struck a pedestrian at 124th Avenue in Commerce City. I was at 120th Avenue, four blocks to the south. The crew made an emergency call to DS86 to report the incident. The train came to a stop and first responders were there almost immediately. I left and headed home right after this quick shot showing a cop arriving on scene, having a bit of a hard time keeping it together on the car ride. Nothing but prayers for the family involved and the steam crew onboard UP 844. The train remained stopped for nearly four hours as police investigated. UP 1943 was the diesel unit chosen to give an assist to UP 844 this year. A diesel engine is always added to help maintain track speed and offer some dynamics on the downhill stretches.
