BNSF's Brush Sub crosses over UP's Greeley Sub at the diamond (the track in the foreground) which takes UP from Denver to Cheyenne. A trio of elephant-style GEs lead the high priority east. The DPUs are crossing over the former Rock Island line that led to North Yard. The line is now owned by the Denver Rock Island, a short line that operates a few miles of track in the Denver area. Also note the newest looking bridge in the distance. This bridge is indeed quite new, carrying RTD's N-Line commuter rail traffic from Denver Union Station out to the suburb of Thornton. It's path is currently blocked by a westbound BNSF coal load, crossing over the diamond at Sand Creek on the BNSF Brush Sub, underneath the I-270 overpass. Once the coal load clear, the local will still have to wait a bit as a southbound UP manifest switches some cars out at an industry off in the distance. Then, the train will make another reverse move (across a grade crossing) to connect the train in preparation for departure north. Hard to believe UP's heritage units have been around long enough to now be referred to as "old friend". UP 1989 was unveiled at North Yard in Denver nearly 17 years ago (as of this photo). In the 1890s, the railroad primarily operated in Kansas and Texas, resulting in the abbreviation "K-T" or "KT" be used. It didn't take long for the nickname "The Katy" to be adopted by the railroad. It happened to be in Denver in September 2005, just a month after being unveiled, and I was able to find it.
