Here is an interesting lashup for ya! On one hand we have a newly revamped GP38-2 wearing a fresh coat of blue and white GATX leasing paint. On the other hand, we have a nearly pristine (former) Cotton Belt GP40-2. Gray and blue, what do you think? These units are just one set of switchers based out of Roydale on UP's Limon Subdivision.

There aren't a lot of GP35's left in the world, particularly on Class 1 railroads. Indeed, these were some of the first units to fall of Rio Grande's roster toward the end of its life in the mid-to-late 1980's. A fair number, however, have survived to continue in switching service on BNSF's roster.

The paint scheme applied to the demo GP60s and SD60s that EMD produced has always been one of my favorites. A very close second (seeing as how it is almost identical) is the scheme worn by the 100 leaser units from Oakway. I'm a sucker for a shot of one of these SD60s anytime!

Warbonnets are becoming harder and harder to find as more and more units are being repainted in the New Image paint scheme. Even though its paint isn't quite as stunning as when it was first new, BNSF 791 is still well worth the shot.

While the GP60 is one of my favorite units of all-time, I really don't care much for the GP60M. Something about the wide cab on the short frame of a four axle unit just doesn't look quite right!

At the time of the photo, this ES44AC was only a few months old and certainly one of the newest units on BNSF's fleet. The unit was leading a coal empty north through Denver and the lighting was too good not to take the shot!

The Denver area has changed much since UP 844 first rolled onto UP rails back in 1944! 63 years later, UP 844 leads the Cheyenne Frontier Days train which will depart Denver two days later. The diesel "helper" unit is UP 5327, an ES44AC that is less than a year old!

After coming down the Greeley Subdivision from Cheyenne, UP 844 (and train) entered UP's 36th Street facing south. However, in order to prepare for Saturday's departure, the train was wyed in 36th Street, using a bit of Limon Sub to get the job done. Here, the train is almost all the way back into Union Station.

UP 844 slowly backs up into Union Station. Behind UP 844, UPP 814 (the Joe Jordan) is the "water bottle" for the train. This car provides water for the big steam unit for the duration of the trip.

In preparation for Cheyenne Frontier Days, UP backs 19 of its passengers cars down the 36th Street inbound track, into Union Station. The train, with UP 844 and UP 5327 (a "just in case" ES44AC) will be on display in Denver on Friday and depart north for Frontier Days early Saturday morning.

Waiting for UP's dispatcher (DS-86) to get them a clear signal at C&S Junction, the "First Beer Run" sits shy of the grade crossing at Tennyson Street. I thought the power choice was particularly interesting...a year-old SD70ACe and a twenty-five year old SD40-2!

1992 or 2007? Except for the large yellow patches and incorrect numbers on all three of these GP40-2s, this images could almost pass as one right out of the past! These three geeps are switching a few cars around in North Yard.

In the foreground, UP 1344 (ex-DRGW 3121) switches covered hoppers on some yard tracks in North Yard. In the distance, the MNPNY comes into North Yard (on Track 7) from the Belt Line at the north end of the yard. If you look closely, note the Rio Grande Heritage Unit is fourth in the consist of the MNPNY!

A slightly different perspective on the classic EMD Spartan cab. UPY 661, a GP15-1, is being remote-controlled as it passes beneath 48th Avenue in North Yard. This GP15-1 started life in January 1980 as Missouri Pacific 2161.
