The crew on the Limon Local has assembled its train after picking up cars here at Roydale. The train is now out on Main 1, waiting for the dispatcher to set up a signal for the train to continue east.

When RTD wanted to build a commuter rail from Union Station to Denver International Airport, RTD purchased some of the right-of-way that UP owned between 36th Street and east between Sable and Mesa. With the proceeds from the sale, UP installed CTC on the west end of the Limon Sub, and added a second main track to the far west end as well.

The engineer and conductor on the Limon Local are working to pick up a pair of SD40-2s and the first few cars for the trip east to Limon. The engineer had to retrieve an MU cable to connect the ES44AC to the SD40-2. The conductor is getting ready to knock off hand brakes.

As far as I know, UP has all of it DC GE-fleet in long term storage. UP 9755 is an example of a C44-9W that is currently in 36th Street. UP has taken some of these older units and rebuilt them into C44ACM, with AC traction motors.

UP 3854 sits in a long string of units at 36th Street that are in long term storage. Of the roughly 1,400 SD70Ms that UP ordered in the early 2000s, I am curious as to just how many are currently sitting in storage, not being used.

The Rocky Mountaineer departed Denver this morning for Moab, UT. The two GP40-3s are working at the moment, so the SD40M-2 is being left behind in Denver with the SD18 that is used for switching.

This "train" here is the Limon Local. Well, it is (of course) just a single unit right now. The unit will pick up the cars for the local in the Roydale Yard on the Limon Sub.

Union Pacific has a pretty substantial maintenance project coming up. They are going to replace the ties throughout the 6.2 mile long Moffat Tunnel. The project includes quite a bit of fresh ballast as well. This ballast train is on Track 1 in North Yard. Currently, there is no power...but eventually, the train will be taken west, up to the Moffat.

Yard Shots Norfolk Southern, Union Pacific
The poles around North Yard make this a bit of a tricky shot to get, but I thought it was worth it as it could be representative of the future. At the end of July, Union Pacific and Norfolk Southern announced their intention to merge. There are many regulatory hurdles for the railroads to overcome, but if they end up getting approval to merge, this is a scene that will become far more common.

A pair of GP38-2s sit near the North Yard yard tower, awaiting their next switching assignment. UP 737, technically now a GP38N after a rebuild, just celebrated its 45th birthday! It was originally delivered to Missouri Pacific as MP 2237 in August 1980.

AMTK 22 and AMTK 134 heads south on Main 1 of the Joint Line, just south of Acequia. Unfortunately, a few traffic lights through Littleton hemmed me up long enough to prevent the shot I wanted to get...but this one isn't too bad with the Front Range visible in the background.

Amtrak AIRO train set heads south on the Joint Line on Main 2, running alongside I-25. As you can probably infer from the pictures, I-25 is an extremely busy freeway. Indeed, it is the busiest freeway in the state of Colorado, with congestion throughout the Denver Metro area a regular fixture to the freeway on a daily basis.
