An on-time Zephyr (with a burned out tail light) waits on Track 4 for its scheduled departure time. Train Hall will feature eight tracks. Tracks 1-3 will be used for the East Line to DIA and the North Line to Thornton. Tracks 4 and 5 will be reserved for non-commuter trains such as Amtrak and UP's Cheyenne Frontier Days train. Tracks 6-8 will be used for the Gold Line to Arvada and (if it is ever built), the Northwest Line to Boulder/Longmont.

Prior to the renovations, Amtrak passengers would descend unground to a tunnel in order to access the platform for Track 1. Now, passengers walk out the back doors directly to the platforms, same as they did through the 1990s. However, when first existing the station, passengers will find stairs/elevators descending to the "Bus Concourse". The unground bus terminal is going to replace RTD Market Street Station located a few blocks away. Passengers will be able to get to the platforms for tracks 2-8 underground, as well as the Light Rail station located a few blocks to the northwest.

If you remember the old layout of (the interior of) Union Station prior to construction, then this angle might look familiar. This shot features Amtrak's new ticket office in the station. Once upon a time, this was the location of a gift shop in the station. The hall to the left has an elevator that went down to the O-Scale and HO-Scale layouts that were located in the basement.

The front of Union Station in Denver offers up a timeless view. The building will be preserved as a Historic Monument. The orange neon sign was added to the station in 1952 in an attempt to promote train travel as airlines were increasingly taking over the rails. Trains at the station came close to extinction in 2009, particularly after the Ski Train stopped running. Now, the station is preparing to once again become a major rail hub with commuter rail (plus Amtrak) arriving out back.

Since coal tends to dominate the scene in Denver, AC units tend to be quite a bit more common that DC units. Still, DC units find their way to town on other trains such as manifests. This C44-9W sits quietly outside the North Yard engine shop, the victim of some light "tagging" on the long hood. This particular unit started life wearing the Chicago North Western lightning scheme.

Just west of Roydale (and Havana Street), we see the progress on the construction of Main 2 on the Limon Sub. This second main will be about four miles long, paralleling the existing main to the right. The addition of this main, as well as CTC, will make it much easier for through trains to get around locals that frequently work the existing main track. In the distance, you can see the relatively new Central Park Blvd overpass just a bit east of Ulster Street (and the old Sandown Junction). Once upon a time, this shot would have contained a tunnel (for the tracks) underneath the north/south runways of Stapleton International Airport!

More often than not, South Denver is a pretty good place to find a few parked trains. When there is insufficient space in BNSF's Denver Yard and/or insufficient crews, northbounds coming off the Joint Line will frequently tie down on Main 2 or Main 3 along the triple track, starting at South Denver. They never tie down on Main 1. Granted at least one main needs to remain open, but it is always Main 1 because Main 1 is actually owned by UP. Main 2 and Main 3 are both owned by BNSF. Granted BNSF dispatches all three mains. BNSF also had trains tied down in the sidings at LoDo and Hogan's Alley. In this shot, a pair of coal empties sit on Main 2 (closest) and Main 3 (furthest) at South Denver, awaiting crews that will take them north. Main 1 lies empty in the foreground.

Norfolk Southern
|
NS 8102 is the first of the 20 heritage units that Norfolk Southern released a few years ago that I have seen. The unit came to Denver on a BNSF manifest as part of a power share. It was in town for less than 24 hours, departing south on President's Day. The Pennsylvania Railroad started in 1946 and was the largest railroad in the United States (in terms of traffic and revenue) for the first half of the 20th century. In its history, it actually had a budget larger than the US government and had a workforce of 250,000 people. In 1968, it merged with New York Central to create Penn Central. Eight years later, Penn Central became a part of Conrail. Finally, Conrail was split in 1999 with 58% going to Norfolk Southern.
