The front of Union Station in Denver offers up a timeless view. The building will be preserved as a Historic Monument. The orange neon sign was added to the station in 1952 in an attempt to promote train travel as airlines were increasingly taking over the rails. Trains at the station came close to extinction in 2009, particularly after the Ski Train stopped running. Now, the station is preparing to once again become a major rail hub with commuter rail (plus Amtrak) arriving out back.

I'm not huge into rolling stock, but I couldn't pass up the opportunity to nab a quick shot of this blue-schemed "Route Rock" Rock Island boxcar. It is now owned by the KYLE railroad and has, unfortunately, fallen victim to some heavy tagging.

Hostlers move a cut of units from the servicing tracks to the ready tracks in North Yard. UP 7050 was delivered as an AC6000CW but has since been converted to a 4400 HP unit as redesignated as a C44/60AC.

Since coal tends to dominate the scene in Denver, AC units tend to be quite a bit more common that DC units. Still, DC units find their way to town on other trains such as manifests. This C44-9W sits quietly outside the North Yard engine shop, the victim of some light "tagging" on the long hood. This particular unit started life wearing the Chicago North Western lightning scheme.

Just west of Roydale (and Havana Street), we see the progress on the construction of Main 2 on the Limon Sub. This second main will be about four miles long, paralleling the existing main to the right. The addition of this main, as well as CTC, will make it much easier for through trains to get around locals that frequently work the existing main track. In the distance, you can see the relatively new Central Park Blvd overpass just a bit east of Ulster Street (and the old Sandown Junction). Once upon a time, this shot would have contained a tunnel (for the tracks) underneath the north/south runways of Stapleton International Airport!

Construction of RTD's "East Line", the commuter line from Union Station to Denver International Airport, is reported as being 60% complete. Just west of Havana Street, you can see that the westbound track (to the right) is fully ballasted. The eastbound track (to the left/center) has largely been laid, but no ballast has been added yet.

More often than not, South Denver is a pretty good place to find a few parked trains. When there is insufficient space in BNSF's Denver Yard and/or insufficient crews, northbounds coming off the Joint Line will frequently tie down on Main 2 or Main 3 along the triple track, starting at South Denver. They never tie down on Main 1. Granted at least one main needs to remain open, but it is always Main 1 because Main 1 is actually owned by UP. Main 2 and Main 3 are both owned by BNSF. Granted BNSF dispatches all three mains. BNSF also had trains tied down in the sidings at LoDo and Hogan's Alley. In this shot, a pair of coal empties sit on Main 2 (closest) and Main 3 (furthest) at South Denver, awaiting crews that will take them north. Main 1 lies empty in the foreground.

Colorado Springs (UP)/Pikes Peak (BNSF) Norfolk Southern
NS 8102 is the first of the 20 heritage units that Norfolk Southern released a few years ago that I have seen. The unit came to Denver on a BNSF manifest as part of a power share. It was in town for less than 24 hours, departing south on President's Day. The Pennsylvania Railroad started in 1946 and was the largest railroad in the United States (in terms of traffic and revenue) for the first half of the 20th century. In its history, it actually had a budget larger than the US government and had a workforce of 250,000 people. In 1968, it merged with New York Central to create Penn Central. Eight years later, Penn Central became a part of Conrail. Finally, Conrail was split in 1999 with 58% going to Norfolk Southern.

A quick roster shot of both BNSF 5282 and NS 8102. Both are somewhat unique (as of this date). While BNSF 5282 might not seem particularly special, it is actually one of the few "New Image" (or "Swoosh") C44-9Ws on BNSF's roster. They haven't repainted too many C44-9Ws yet in the latest scheme. NS 8102, of course, is one of Norfolk Southern's numerous heritage units.

President's Day 2014 ended up being the first time I personally saw one of Norfolk Southern's Heritage Units. Specifically, the Pennsy unit (NS 8102). It came to Denver the day before on a BNSF manifest. It had a quick turnaround and was headed back south in the afternoon on BNSF's HDENAMS (Denver, CO to Amarillo, TX). Unfortunately, as seen here, the heritage unit did not lead. However, one of the few "New Image" or "Swoosh" painted BNSF C44-9Ws was on the point.

Kicking it up a notch, UP's South Local heads south on Main 1 through Hogan's Alley. The observation tower at Elitch's Amusement Park is clearly visible in the distance. The local runs on Monday's and Friday's, switching industries along the north end of the Joint Line.

Now that is a lot of concrete ties! Each (full) stack looks to have 90 ties. A very quick (and extremely rough) estimate indicates there are probably over 40,000 ties here, ready to be used! At 20" between each tie (about right for EMU commuter rail), these ties could cover 12 miles of single track or 6 miles of double track. Actually not all that much when you think about it.

All tied up? Thousands of concrete ties lay stacked up, ready for use in the construction of the RTD Gold Line from Union Station to Arvada. The line is scheduled to open in 2016.

Yard Shots Union Pacific, Rio Grande
Regardless of the paint scheme, I really love seeing good old spartan cabs hanging around North Yard! One of these units in particular has been around North Yard for a very long time. UP 1349 was once DRGW 3128, one of the last GP40-2s delivered to the Grande. It was patched on May 16, 2005 and received a full repaint in April 2007. At that time, the Mars light was removed and air conditioning was added.

With two rail yards in Denver, it seems possible that North Yard could be deemed redundant and abandoned in favor of 36th Street Yard. Then again, the opposite could be said. Regardless, I am grateful that the rails representing Rio Grande are still being used beneath 48th Avenue.
