This is one of only two unpatched Espee GP60s left on UP's roster at this time, the other being SP 9721. The paint is definitely looking a little shoddy, but I felt pretty lucky to come across one of the only "unassimilated" units left on UP's roster! Unfortunately, the unit was pretty well tucked back in North Yard, so I had to settle for this "over the fence", "from a distance shot" from 48th Avenue.

So much in this shot has changed over the years and so much has stayed the same. The track configuration and rolling stock sitting in the yard hasn't changed much. The type of power and color scheme has changed dramatically! 30 years ago, this was the main yard for the Rio Grande and there was a sea of Black and Aspen Gold here. 20 years ago, Scarlet Gray had moved in. Today, Armour Yellow dominates as North Yard is now just a small, local yard on Union Pacific's vast system.

Not long ago, this empty field was the home of American Concrete Pavement. Among other things, the company built thousands of concrete ties for railroads all over the country. The plant has moved to Pueblo, CO now and construction on a new maintenance facility for RTD (for EMU vehicles) is under way.

I enjoy shots that show a lot of details and unique characteristic. Here is a shot of a part of the truck and axle on a UP covered hopper tied down in long-term storage.

Decided to get a little artsy with a covered hopper tied down in long-term storage on a branch line not far from Mesa siding on the Limon Sub.

As I was headed back to town from the area around Mesa on UP's KP Line, I noticed a long string of covered hoppers near Himalaya Road. Appeared that these cars are presently surplus and were tied down on this old branch track.

Just a short distance west of the west switch of Mesa, construction on a new overpass for EMU commuter rail is making progress. Once complete, this bridge will be nearly 5,000 feet long! It is here that the commuter rail will leave the UP right of way and swing north, crossing the track, Airport Blvd, 32nd Avenue and I-70. This 22.8 mile long line from Union Station to Denver International Airport is scheduled to open in 2016.

Cement ties for UPs new main track lay along the existing main, running underneath the relatively new Central Park Blvd bridge. These scene has changed dramatically in the last five years. Here is a shot from the same basic place in 2007. Then, there was the main and a field!

A UP ballast train, working on the second main being installed east of Denver on the Limon Sub, sits and waits further instructions. In the foreground, cement pillars have been put in place that will be the base for the catenary poles for EMU commuter rail.

To build a EMU commuter line from Union Station to Denver International Airport, RTD is laying rail along UP's Limon Subdivision east of Denver. As part of the agreement, Union Pacific is getting a second main track and CTC in the area. Here, the existing main (to the left) and the new main (to the right, still under construction) can be seen at Dahlia Street.

The parking around the outside of Union Station has been removed and some contemporary buildings are being built in their place. You can see one of the new buildings in the distance, located between Union Station and the Ice House. Union Station is slated to reopen to the public in summer of 2014.

Scaffolding covers the exterior of Union Station as works continues to restore the historical monument. This is the scene from 17th and Wynkoop. Better this than a demolition team!

A lot of work has been done on the enclosure and tracks behind Union Station. The sign in the foreground clearly indicates there will be eight tracks total. At least one of those tracks will be reserved for "heavy rail" trains such as Amtrak. Hopefully there will be a second track dedicated to heavy rail so trains like Cheyenne Frontier Days will have a home, when needed.

Traditional shots in the back of Union Station are a thing of the past. While I am thrilled that Union Station itself isn't going anywhere, modern architecture is quickly closing in around it from all sides.

A look toward the stub-ends of the eight new tracks behind Union Station. These tracks, located beneath this interesting enclosure, will include tracks for EMU commuters to run to Denver International Airport, Arvada and eventually (if funding is found) Thornton and Boulder/Longmont.
