Yard Shots CSX, BNSF
I'm thinking this unit may have recently been rebuilt. Or, at a minimum, was recently repainted. The "Dark Future" on this CSX unit looks darn near pristine as the fourth unit on the BNSF Laurel, MT to Denver, CO manifest.

Many of BNSF's Warbonnets still exist, and many of them have held up pretty well over the past few decades. BNSF 4717 is a great example, third on the southbound Laurel-Denver manifest this morning.

A relatively short Laurel to Denver manifest just arrived off the Front Range Sub with a bit of a rainbow lineup on the head end, including a Warbonnet and a CSX ES44AC. The train has come to a stop at the south end of Rennicks Yard near Prospect Junction.

East of Rennicks Yard, there are roughly a dozen or so companies that ship and/or receive via rail. BNSF has a switch job that works six days a week switching cars out for the industries. Currently, a pair of GP39-2s have the task. The units are remote control enabled, so a single crewman is capable of throw switching and uncoupling cars, while controlling the units from his remote pack.

A trio of units are elephant-style on the head end of BNSF's Denver to Laurel manifest. The train is sitting on BNSF's "New North Main" alongside Rennicks Intermodal Yard on one side, and UP's North Yard on the other side. The train is working on getting a track warrant so it can head north on the FRS.

Denver's rail intermodal scene is pretty small compared to markets like LA or Chicago. Rennicks Yard represents BNSF's entire intermodal presence in Denver. Granted, it is not an insignificant yard, seen here form the north end. A lot of JB Hunt (and other) trailers flow through here on a weekly basis.

A BNSF switch job, with a still-yellow-and-blue GP39-2, waits patiently at a red signal at Utah Jct. BNSF's tracks cross UP's Belt Lead at Utah Junction, and the diamond is controlled by Union Pacific DS-378. So, the BNSF crew is at the mercy of UP's dispatcher to allow them to cross the diamond to continue their switching.

At the south end of Rennicks yard, BNSF's Denver-Laurel manifest is pulling north on the "New North Main" through Fox Junction. The train is quite long today, coming in at over 8,000 feet in the length. While the head end is over here at Fox, the tail is still in the yard over at 31st Street. The train is starting to pull up toward Utah Jct to clear up for the Zephyr, which is ready to head west (but currently blocked).

Yard Shots BNSF, Santa Fe
Classic Santa Fe blue and yellow units are, of course, becoming increasingly rare in 2025. So, I was really happy to nab this shot of a BNSF GP39-2 (still painted in "Yellowbonnet") with a former-Santa Fe SD45-2B sitting in North Yard in the distance, waiting to be moved to Iowa. BNSF 2854 is switching some intermodal cars around at Rennicks.

Near Rennicks Yard, a BNSF GP60 and a GP39-2 sit attached to a handful of cars that need to be switched out at local industries. It's been awhile since I've seen a GP60, so I was very happy to come across this guy.

After nearly an hour of nothing moving, I was about ready to call it a day and head home when I noticed a blade train coming off the Front Range Sub! The train was instructed to pull through Rennicks and continue south on the Joint Line. A new crew was waiting at Walnut Street. Here, the train is coming through Rennicks Yard.

An SD40-2 and a GP39-2 work to switch out strings of double stack containers in Rennicks Yard. The three tracks closed to the camera are owned by BNSF. All tracks beyond are owned by Union Pacific. Indeed, the classic North Yard yard office rests on the far sides of the tracks.

At the south end of Rennicks, BNSF's intermodal yard in Denver, a couple of sets of power are hanging out. A crew appears to be working on one set, perhaps for a southbound train on the Joint Line later in the day.
