Coming past the Fraser depot, UP 1988 is rolling east at about 12 MPH. With four units and 78 cars, the train is probably right around 2.0 HPT, which is about the bare minimum to crawl up the 2% grade coming up between Fraser and Winter Park.

After holding at Tabernash for nearly 90 minutes, UP 1988 now gets its turn to attack the grade up to Winter Park. The grade at Fraser decreased from 1.75% to just under 1%, making the climb a little bit easier. All four units (two on the point and two on the rear) are definitely in run 8.

Running just nine minutes late, the eastbound Zephyr departs Fraser, CO, its last station stop west of Denver. The perspective here is from the top of the Fraser tubing hill. In the winter, you can rent a huge inter tube and fly down the hill.

After completing its station stop in Fraser, the eastbound Zephyr (led by AMTK 46 and AMTK 3) continues east past the east switch in fantastic afternoon light.

A typical Zephyr consist slows to a stop at the platform in Fraser for a brief station stop. Regardless of the number of passenger getting on or off, the train stops for about ten minutes to give passengers a chance to smoke on the platform (as the train itself is strictly no smoking). In the distance, most of the Winter Park ski resort has shut down for the season.

The westbound Zephyr is only about five minutes late as it pulls towards the platform at Fraser. A UP track patrolman in a hyrailer heads east on the siding at Fraser, meeting the Zephyr.

Fraser is a pretty popular destination for a lot skiers. While there is the Winter Park Express (Ski Train), it mainly bring up passengers from the Denver-area. Other skiers ride the California Zephyr to and from Fraser. Several passengers on the platform, including this gentleman, head for their assigned coach, ready to board.

I love how each of the cars from the original California Zephyr all had names. Each one was named Silver something. Not only were they all named, but the three railroads that operated the train (CB&Q, Rio Grande, and Western Pacific) gave cars of the same type similar names. For example, all of the observation cars that were found on the end of the train were given names that somehow related to great views and/or celestial things. Western Pacific had the Silver Planet and Silver Crescent. CB&Q had the Silver Solarium, Silver Horizon, Silver Penthouse, and Silver Lookout. Rio Grande had the Silver Sky.

The Silver Solarium has a good looking neon sign on the tail end, advertising its history. Love the representation of the Golden Gate Bridge, too.

I love Amtrak and I am really happy that the California Zephyr continues to run in 2018. But there sure is something elegant about the Budd-built cars of the original Zephyr! The Silver Solarium (and the Silver Rapids ahead of it) sit on the main at the platform at Fraser.

The Winter Park Express gets ready to proceed east behind the Zephyr, as we get a look at the Silver Solarium sitting on the back of the Zephyr at the platform at Fraser.

Now that's what I'm talking about! The snow is coming down hard as the eastbound Zephyr passes by the Winter Park Express at Fraser. The Zephyr will stop at the platform here at Fraser to drop off and pick up passengers, and give all passengers the opportunity to step off the train for a few minutes.

The past meets the even-more-distant past! AMTK 184 is on the California Zephyr and wears the Phase 4 Heritage scheme. This is an adaptation of the relatively short-lived Phase 4 paint scheme that Amtrak used for about six years between 1999 and 2005. AMTK 156 wears the Phase 1 Heritage scheme. This is an adaptation of the "Bloody Nose" or "Pointless Arrow" scheme. This was the first official scheme that Amtrak had, and was used for about ten years, from 1971 to 1981.

Highball Fraser! With its station stop complete and all passengers back on board, the two P42DCs on the point of the California Zephyr throttle up and start pulling west.

Two blasts on the horn of AMTK 184 inform the passengers on the platform at Fraser that it is time to board the train. The Zephyr will be headed west in about two minutes. In the distance, you can see the slopes at Winter Park, for which the Winter Park Express brought a train load of passengers up to.
