When Rock Island went out of business, their assets were sold off. 45 years later, you can still find some rolling stock in Rock Island blue scheme. I never had the opportunity to shoot this scheme on locomotives, but it is pretty cool to find it on the occasional covered hopper.

An NKCR train departed Grant eastbound this morning to switch in Madrid, NE. It is now headed back west, passing by its headquarters. OMLX 421, a former Espee Tunnel Motor, is sitting at the shop. I was hoping it would be on the train today, but alas, it was not. OMLX 413 was used for today instead.

Nearly an hour of switching industries in Grant, NE, this NKCR train is getting ready to depart west toward Sterling, CO. After a morning of overcast skies, the clouds are starting to clear out a bit and some direct sunlight shown through!

The population of Grant, NE is just over 1,100 people. A few of them work for Nebraska, Kansas, and Colorado Railway, which is headquartered in the town. You can see the shop and fuel tracks here, where OMLX 421 was sitting.

It is really great to see Tunnel Motors finding life after Class 1 railroads. After absorbing Southern Pacific (which, of course, was taken over by Rio Grande), Union Pacific was the only Class 1 railroad with any Tunnel Motors. However, UP shed the Tunnel Motors from their roster well over a decade ago. A former Espee SD40T-2 has been acquired by OmniTrax and has been repainted in the blue NKCR paint scheme. It was not in use on this day, was sitting outside the shop in Grant, NE.

Although Nebraska, Kansas, and Colorado is owned by OmniTrax, it is one of roughly 25 railroads owned by OmniTrax, and still operates on its own to a certain extent. The railroad is headquartered in Grant, NE, roughly 20 miles east of the Colorado/Nebraska border. On the east edge of town, you can see the Nebraska State Championships for the Plainsmen.

OMLX 419 is a (rebuilt) SD40-3. It was originally delivered to Canadian National (as CN 5126) in 1969. After going through a handful of leaser railroads, the unit wound up on the roster of OmniTrax, the owner of NKCR. Two years ago, it was repainted in an OmniTrax paint scheme that includes the Scoular name (an Agriculture Supply Chain Solutions company), and the NKCR herald on the cab.

While the Class 1 railroads have most of the power and most of the rail miles in the country, don't underestimate the role of short line railroads. Nebraska, Kansas, and Colorado is one such short line. The railroad is owned by OmniTrax, and has just over 500 miles of track. The railroad is based in Grant, NE and has seven units on the roster. Here, a pair of SD40s lead a westbound manifest consisting of three covered hoppers and a string of tank cars.
