My Canon 40D only had an ISO range up to 3200, and that was very grainy. This is the first experiment with my Canon 7D which can go all the way up to 12800! In this 30 second exposure, there is a clear signal for an approaching eastbound light power move. The stars in the night sky can clearly be seen.

After the sun has set, it is time to check out the stars! In this 45 minute exposure, the stars have a descent swirl to them around the North Star at the west switch of Sagers.

The sun is just inches away from dipping behind the horizon to the west. Meanwhile, we observe a new signal mast that UP has erected in preparation for replacing the old DRGW signal which has stood here for decades.

An unusual site for the Utah Desert...at least in 2012. In the 1980's, it was not uncommon to see the Kansas on the back of the California Zephyr when Rio Grande officials needed to go from Denver to Salt Lake City or vice versa. On those trips, the Zephyr would usually have a Rio Grande unit as a pilot on the front of the train.

For years, this car was known as the Wilson McCarthy when it was a business car for Rio Grande. It was renamed the Kansas and served many years on the Ski Train as one of the private cars (along with the Utah and California). Now, it has been rebranded for the "American Railway Explorer". This is a new service that will be based out of Los Angeles for trips up and down the coast. This may well be the last time the car is on former DRGW trackage! One last nail in the Ski Train coffin.

The westbound California Zephyr is right on time as it makes its way through the desolate scenery of the Utah Desert. On this day, the Zephyr happens to have a bonus car! The "Kansas" (previously the Wilson McCarthy) which was used as a business car for years on the Rio Grande, and later on the Ski Train, is being sent to Los Angeles, its new home.

It is very early in the morning (around 5:00am) as a westbound makes its way past the high green signal at the east end of Sagers. The train is a BNSF Denver to Stockton manifest making its way west across the Utah Desert.

The last train to pass by the east end of Sagers in daylight (well, what's left of it anyway) was BNSF's Stockton to Denver manifest. The last few hints of sunlight are rapidly fading at 9:00pm as BNSF 4861 east heads quickly toward Grand Junction.
