UP 1943, painted to honor the United States Armed Forces, leads an Officer's Special westbound at Tolland amidst some blossoming fall colors. Due to a cool and west June, the trees are turning colors much later in the season than normal. A high ranking UP official is retiring soon and is enjoying a private run from Denver to Grand Junction and back, courtesy of UP.

Fall colors are not yet at their peak, but they are still looking pretty good as UP 1943 leads an Officer's Special west on the main at Tolland.

This westbound sand train is headed directly in to the sun as the train slows to a stop on the siding at Tolland. The train just met the Winter Park Express, but another eastbound is waiting for the Moffat Tunnel to vent and head through. So, the sand train must wait...much to the disappointment of the crew as the heavy train will not be easy (or fast) to start up!

Thanks to the lengthening of the days and the switch to Daylight Savings Time, there is now plenty of sunlight for the eastbound Winter Park Express as it glides east on the main at Tolland.

AMTK 196 and 156 bring up the tail end of the Winter Park Express at Tolland. These units, being controlled by the F40PH (an NPCU) on the other end, are keeping the trains speed under control with their dynamic brakes. Note the red class lights on the nose of AMTK 196, indicated the back of the train.

You couldn't ask for better weather conditions when the subject of your picture is the Winter Park Express Ski Train! Amtrak F40PH #406 (now technically an NPCU) leads the eastbound train through blowing snow in the rapidly fading light at Tolland.

If you are unfamiliar with the term NPCU, it refers to a Non-Powered Cab Unit. This F40PH no longer has a prime mover under the hood. The cab itself is still unaltered though, complete with a control stand. The control stand remotely controls the P42DCs on the other end of the train. So, when climbing a grade, the train is actually being pushed up the grade (when in this configuration), not pulled.

The nose of Amtrak F40PH #406 emerges from a huge snow cloud...a cloud that the F40PH itself created as it blasted through a snow bank at the grade crossing at Tolland.

High winds and snow plows worked together to pile up some snow on the right of way at the grade crossing at Tolland. Snow that the eastbound Winter Park Express has no problem bursting through! Amtrak F40PH #406 knocks the white stuff out of the way on the main.

Running roughly 20 minutes late, the eastbound Winter Park Express approaches the grade crossing at Tolland in relatively low light. The train was delayed a bit as it had to run through the Moffat Tunnel at 15 MPH.

The yellow-orange paint that Rio Grande used on its engines up until the mid-1980s was referred to as "Aspen Gold", and this is why! Rio Grande's paint scheme looked mighty fine among the changing aspens. Nearly three decades after the end of Rio Grande, a BNSF manifest pulls down the main at Tolland. The train will take the siding at East Portal to meet the eastbound California Zephyr.

A bit of winter weather blows over the Continental Divide to the west as EMD's SD70ACe-T4 special glides east on the main at Tolland. The special made extremely good time on its way back east. After this shot, I was unable to catch the train again until Blue Mountain.

Almost without exception, Union Pacific runs coal trains on the Moffat in either a 2x3x1 configuration or a 2x2x2 configuration. Note I said almost. This is one of the exceptions. The train is set up in a 2x5x2 configuration (which I had actually never seen before), giving a total of nine units working to move the 115 car train east!

Light is quickly fading as an eastbound coal load, kicking up some snow, meets a westbound BNSF manifest at Tolland. Interestingly, I shot this exact same coal train the previous day when it was headed west! The train loaded at the Energy Mine overnight and is now headed back to Denver.

The headlights are off and the crew is getting comfortable! The train is in the clear at Tolland and is now waiting for a pair of eastbounds, both of which are still on the other side of the divide. The temperature outside here is -2°F with some strong winds, bringing the wind chill down to "don't stand outside for more than a few minutes!"
