Running 4 1/2 hours late, the westbound Zephyr attempts to make up some time as it heads west through Barbara's Gulch. I'm not entirely sure what the cause was, but virtually all the time was lost the previous night between Lincoln and Hastings, NE.

The westbound Zephyr is approaching the narrowest part of Barbara's Gulch as it heads west through Arvada. Note the baggage car, one of the brand new baggage cars delivered to Amtrak in 2015. The new cars are climate controlled and allow Amtrak to far better-manage bags.

This classic shot at West Rollins is likely only going to be possible for another year or so (without any obstructions). A couple of pine trees are threatening to block the view of the tracks! But, that hasn't quite happened yet on this frigid day as the westbound Zephyr, running 4 1/2 hours late, approaches the west end of Rollins.

BNSF's Denver-Provo manifest pulls into the clear in the siding at Tolland. The crew is in for a bit of a wait here as they are going to have to wait for two eastbounds, the first of which is over an hour away!

The headlights are off and the crew is getting comfortable! The train is in the clear at Tolland and is now waiting for a pair of eastbounds, both of which are still on the other side of the divide. The temperature outside here is -2°F with some strong winds, bringing the wind chill down to "don't stand outside for more than a few minutes!"

An eastbound UP coal load emerges from the shadows on the main at Tolland, meeting a westbound BNSF manifest that has been sitting in the hole for over an hour awaiting the coal trains arrival.

Light is quickly fading as an eastbound coal load, kicking up some snow, meets a westbound BNSF manifest at Tolland. Interestingly, I shot this exact same coal train the previous day when it was headed west! The train loaded at the Energy Mine overnight and is now headed back to Denver.

Almost without exception, Union Pacific runs coal trains on the Moffat in either a 2x3x1 configuration or a 2x2x2 configuration. Note I said almost. This is one of the exceptions. The train is set up in a 2x5x2 configuration (which I had actually never seen before), giving a total of nine units working to move the 115 car train east!

This was a tough shot to get due to the drastic difference in exposure between the shaded train and bridge in the foreground and the sunlit mountains in the distance. However, for the sake of a former CNW AC4400CW - whose former number is clearly showing through - it was worth posting.

A pair of SD70ACes bring up the tail end of an eastbound coal load that has just crossed South Boulder Creek east of Tolland. More SD70s have appeared on the Moffat lately. Some speculation as to the reason has to due with the upcoming closing of Burnham. Burnham has primarily serviced GEs for the past 15 years. With it closing, UP not be as picky as to what power makes it into Denver.
