Moffat Tunnel (UP) Winter Park Express
The westbound Winter Park Express climbs the hill out of Rocky toward Big Ten Curve. A pair of P42DCs lead the train on the west end, while a single F40PH brings up the rear. That F40PH will be used to operate the train back east as the train is unable to be turned. The wye in Tabernash is out of service.

The westbound Winter Park Express knocks down the signal at the east end of Plain. High morning winds are causing a lot of snow to get whipped up and blown around.

This spot at the east end of Plain is one of my favorite places to shoot a morning westbound. Sadly, it will only be usable for another few years (at most) as a handful of pine trees are slowly growing up toward obstruction of the scene. For the time being, however, the westbound Winter Park Express (on its second run) heads down the main at Plain.

To help advertise the Winter Park Express (the new Ski Train), Amtrak applied some wraps to three Superliners and the trailing F40PH. Hopefully, the wrap will help in attracting customers to the train, helping it to be successful. The train will run on weekends through March 26, 2017.

Running roughly 20 minutes late, the eastbound Winter Park Express approaches the grade crossing at Tolland in relatively low light. The train was delayed a bit as it had to run through the Moffat Tunnel at 15 MPH.

High winds and snow plows worked together to pile up some snow on the right of way at the grade crossing at Tolland. Snow that the eastbound Winter Park Express has no problem bursting through! Amtrak F40PH #406 knocks the white stuff out of the way on the main.

The nose of Amtrak F40PH #406 emerges from a huge snow cloud...a cloud that the F40PH itself created as it blasted through a snow bank at the grade crossing at Tolland.

You couldn't ask for better weather conditions when the subject of your picture is the Winter Park Express Ski Train! Amtrak F40PH #406 (now technically an NPCU) leads the eastbound train through blowing snow in the rapidly fading light at Tolland.

If you are unfamiliar with the term NPCU, it refers to a Non-Powered Cab Unit. This F40PH no longer has a prime mover under the hood. The cab itself is still unaltered though, complete with a control stand. The control stand remotely controls the P42DCs on the other end of the train. So, when climbing a grade, the train is actually being pushed up the grade (when in this configuration), not pulled.

AMTK 196 and 156 bring up the tail end of the Winter Park Express at Tolland. These units, being controlled by the F40PH (an NPCU) on the other end, are keeping the trains speed under control with their dynamic brakes. Note the red class lights on the nose of AMTK 196, indicated the back of the train.

After meeting the eastbound Winter Park Express Ski Train, this westbound coal empty (headed for the North Fork Branch) is throttling back up after DS-82 set up a clear signal at the west end of Rollins. If you look in the distance, you can see the red signals at the east end of Rollins.

It is a few minutes past sunset and, with the thick clouds, light is rapidly fading as a westbound coal empty pulls west toward a clear signal in the siding at Rollins.

This westbound coal empty is about to knock down a clear signal at the west end of Rollins. The train met the eastbound Winter Park Express Ski Train here at Rollins, and will now have clear signals west to Tabernash. There, the train will hold the main to wait for a 2-hour-late Amtrak #5.
