BNSF does not have trackage rights on UP's Greeley Sub. This lone BNSF ES44C4 must be a lease unit, but it is interesting that it is sitting off the main on one of the lead tracks for Vestas, manufacturer of wind turbines.

A pair of CPKC units (one CP, one KCS) are quite a ways from home as they lead a coal empty north on the Greeley Sub. The train is slowing for the grade crossing at MP 29.99 (County Road 22). A previous train reported that the main lights and gates were working, but the lights on one of the gates were broken off and hanging down. Consequently, an "XH" order was placed on the crossing. This requires all trains to slow to ensure no cars are going through the crossing when they shouldn't.

Have an SD70M right up in your face! The best looking wide cab EMD ever produced, in my humble opinion. Teardrop windows on the point and a great looking nose. The train is currently backing away from the camera, switching cars in a side track at Gilcrest, CO.

Two SD70Ms lead a southbound manifest just south of Gilcrest. The lead SD70M is one of the first ones delivered in the massive order of 1000 units. The second is a "Phase 2" SD70M, denoted by the slightly slanted radiator intakes.

A lake that normally would not exist has popped up along the tracks as a field has flooded in the recent high volumes of rain. Cows in the distance seem to be enjoying the plentiful grass mixed with water as a southbound UP manifest, with a KCS lead, roll by south.

UP's MNPDV is moving south on the Greeley Sub at Gilcrest along US-85. Near-record rainfall in May and June has resulted in some flooded fields along the tracks, creating an interesting dynamic.

The westbound Zephyr is moving along at track speed at the west switch of Tonville, about 20 miles east of Denver. The Zephyr departed Fort Morgan 23 minutes late, but is making up time here and will get in to Denver 17 minutes early. The small pond at the west end of Tonville offer up a crystal clear reflection of the Zephyr as it hustles west.

The conductor on the MNPDV offers up a friendly wave to the photographer, reaching out of a unit rather rare to Colorado. A CN C44-9W (original Illinois Central) is on the point, paired with a UP SD70M for this southbound just south of Ft Lupton.

South of Ft Lupton, at MP 23, UP's MNPDV-24 heads south on the Greeley Sub with a Canadian National (originally an Illinois Central) C44-9W leading. The train consists of double stacks at the front and autoracks at the back. There is a lone tank car cut in to the middle of the autoracks, apparently by mistake!

About 20 minutes before the sun will disappear behind the mountains to the west, UP 9013 leads a manifest south toward Denver on the Greeley Sub. A few miles to the south, the train will be taking the siding at Brighton. But for now, it is running on clear (green) signals and moving at track speed.

Just north of the small town of Nunn, NS 4004 and UP 7331 have 112 empty covered hoppers on the roll northbound. Not too far ahead and the dispatcher would give the train a high wind warning, with wind speeds up to 70 MPH reported. The empty trains "blow over" speed is 78 MPH, meaning the train will be able to continue to Cheyenne.
