Less than an hour before sunset, the eastbound (rerouted) Zephyr is moving quickly at track speed on the Greeley Sub just north of Fort Lupton. A smoky atmosphere from wildfires burning to the west are adding to the colors during this "golden hour" before sunset.

As the sun sinks lower in the west sky, the shadows grow longer. A rerouted California Zephyr passes by fields of crops just north of Fort Lupton about 27 miles north of Union Station.

A few miles south of La Salle, a northbound UP baretable intermodal train flies by the Peckham Feed shop. A single AC4400CW leads the long, empty train.

On this first day of fall, the further west I travelled back toward Denver, the thicker the cloud coverage got. When I setup for this shot, the scene was bathed in great lightning. Alas, a cloud blew in and added shade to the scene a mere 30 seconds prior to the arrival of the train! Ah well...the curve at Keensburg still looks mighty fine, even in the shade.

UP 844 approaches the US-85 overpass just north of Nunn on its return trip toward Denver. Note the gathering of railfans near the left side of the frame.

A local farmer in the small town of Nunn has erected a huge flag pole in his or her field. That flag offers a great backdrop as UP 844 charges north toward the US-85 overpass. Some people may wonder why a diesel engine is on the train. As powerful and amazing as UP 844 is, it alone does not have the power to keep the train moving at track speed. In order to keep the schedule, a diesel engine is added and throttles up (when needed) to assist UP 844.

UP 844 (along with UP 1989, the Rio Grande Heritage Unit) lead the Cheyenne Frontier Days train north out of Nunn. This is the first time since 2013 that the train has had steam on the point. It is also the first time since 2009 that I came to the tracks to shoot UP 844 on the train.

A single ES44AC brings up the tail end of a southbound manifest just north of Ault. The train is moving relatively slowly as it will be taking the siding at Ault for a meet with the northbound Cheyenne Frontier Days train, which is currently making a brief stop in Greeley.

A southbound manifest, dominated by loaded auto racks, rolls south on the Greeley Sub north of the siding of Ault. The train will take the siding at Ault, where it will meet the northbound Cheyenne Frontier Days train. This manifest had an interesting power configuration with a single unit on either end of the train.
