Rocking it like it is 2000! BNSF's Denver-Laurel has a trio of C44-9Ws, all still wearing Heritage 2 paint. The train is passing by Lower Church Lake (which hasn't actually been a lake in a few years; it is all dried up) and approaching the US-36 underpass. It was right at this location when, in 1985, northbound and southbound Burlington Northern trains collided head on, melting the steel of the bridge.

After UP's MNYGR departed North Yard for the Greeley Sub, it was finally BNSF's Denver-Laurel's turn to head north on the Front Range Sub. I was happy this worked out as it has been quite a while since I've done any chasing on the Front Range Sub. The sub tends to be fairly dead most of the time. It carries way less traffic than the Moffat does. Here, the 8,000+ foot long manifest is just a few miles south of the south switch of Broomfield in Westminster.

The Front Range Sub is still run by track warrants in 2025 (meaning there are no signals), but BNSF has added PTC. This means track warrants are issued and acknowledged via computer. Consequently, there is very minimal radio traffic on the Front Range Sub. This northbound will not be meeting anything at Broomfield, which means it'll be another 40 miles before it might meet another train (at Longs Peak).

It is not too terribly common to find a single unit leading any train. However, that was exactly the case today as an ES44AC leads a long baretable train down the Front Range Sub toward Denver. The train just got permission from the yard to continue past 80th Avenue, a common holding place if the yard cannot take trains.
Interestingly, I happened to get a shot of this exact unit less than three weeks earlier, leading the Provo-Denver over the Moffat!
