A couple decades ago, UP had so many units on the roster that they were in danger of running out of 4-digit numbers. Thus, they came up with a new reporting mark: UPY. It stands for "Union Pacific Yard Units". One example is this GP15-1, numbered UPY 618. It was originally a Missouri Pacific unit, delivered in September 1979.

This GP40N has a fairly interesting history. It was delivered as a GP40 (not a GP40-2) to Baltimore and Ohio in November 1966 as B&O 3692. It was briefly on the Chessie roster after the B&O and C&O merger, and then wound up on the CSX roster as CSX 6508. CSX then sold the unit to Espee and it changed colors and roster number, becoming SP 7114. Now, it has found new life as it has been rebuilt to GP40-2 specifications, designated as a GP40N.

The Front Range Sub is still run by track warrants in 2025 (meaning there are no signals), but BNSF has added PTC. This means track warrants are issued and acknowledged via computer. Consequently, there is very minimal radio traffic on the Front Range Sub. This northbound will not be meeting anything at Broomfield, which means it'll be another 40 miles before it might meet another train (at Longs Peak).

This northbound BNSF manifest departed Denver a bit earlier and is headed for Laurel, MT. The train is moving at track speed through east Boulder, crossing 55th Street. The stacks to the left belong to the Valmont power plant. The power plant originally burned coal for power. However, that stopped in 2017 when it was converted to natural gas and an array of solar panels.
