EMD's testing special emerges from the west portal of the Moffat Tunnel into Winter Park. The signal on the left side of the frame is a repeater for the signal at the east switch of Winter Park. This repeater allows crews to see the condition of the east switch well in advance when still in the tunnel.

A 400mm lens comes in extremely handy sometimes! Here is a look at an oncoming train as it approaches the west end of the 6.2 mile long Moffat Tunnel.

If you position yourself just right, you can look straight down into the bore of the Moffat Tunnel from just outside the lodge at the Winter Park Ski Resort. The headlight for this train was visible when it was still three miles away! It is simply amazing that the tunnel was built nearly 100 years ago, in the 1920s.

Even though there is no apparent exhaust, both these EMD prototypes are in Run 8 and pulling hard. From the outside, it looks like the Tier-4 emissions are working out for EMD. Upon reaching East Portal, the consist will wait for the tunnel to vent, and then make a return trip back west to Winter Park.

Even though the EMD prototypes are not particularly visible in this shot, I still consider this the "shot of day"! EMD's testing special is creeping along at 12 MPH as it enters into the west portal of the Moffat Tunnel. The Winter Park ski resort has shut down for the season. The green pipe to the left is a water pipe that goes through the Moffat Water Tunnel (which parallels the train tunnel). It carries water to the Denver area from the west slope of the divide and was a key reason the train tunnel was built.

You can see numerous skiers still hitting the slopes of Winter Park in the background as the tail end DPU on this MNYRO emerges from the Moffat Tunnel and passes the repeater signal at MP 56.5. This signal displays the same aspect as the east switch of Winter Park, which can be see in the distance toward the right side of the photo. The signal allows westbound trains to know what to expect at the east switch of Winter Park. If this repeater is red, trains may pass the signal, prepared to stop at east Winter Park.

Not too hard to determine where this was taken! The winter ski season is getting close to an end as this westbound MNYRO pops out of the west portal of the Moffat Tunnel and passes by a still-busy Winter Park ski resort. This former Espee AC4400CW is one of a handful that got double UP shields on the nose when it was patched.

Just a day before this picture was taken, I got some shots of these two units headed west as light power to pick up a work train at Rollins. Well, here is that work train now as it departs Winter Park to tie up at East Portal!

Since I got a shot of the Zephyr plunging into the Moffat Tunnel on the trip west, I was happy that I had the chance to also grab a shot as we were about to enter the west portal of the Moffat Tunnel on the journey back home.

Some of the first snow of the season covers the peaks in the distance as the eastbound Zephyr approaches Vasquez Road in Winter Park. Most of the leaves are well on their way to their fall color transition!

Say so long to the western slope of the Continental Divide! The MRONY is about to duck into the west portal of the Moffat Tunnel at the base of Winter Park. This is almost the exact spot the Ski Train used to stop to pick up passengers....

The eastbound California Zephyr is about to dive into the west portal of the Moffat Tunnel. From here, it will be a straight roughly two hour shot down the front range and into Denver.

Overcast skies just seemed to demand that this picture appear in black and white! Nobody is aboard the Kansas on this particular day as it sits near the (classic DRGW) signal at the east end of Winter Park.

An afternoon storm has moved into Winter Park as the Ski Train stops to pick up its passengers. The train is just long enough that the last few cars hold in the OS section at the east end of Winter Park.
