A single passenger waits on the platform at Fraser, watching as the westbound Zephyr that he will board approaches from the east.

I have a goal to attempt to record all 207 P42DCs that Amtrak has recorded on "film". Well, I should say the goal is to get pictures of all the remaining units. Several have been scrapped after accidents. However, AMTK 7 is one unit that I hadn't seen yet when I took this shot in Fraser. At this point, I've got nearly 60% of them recorded.

Despite being only a week away from June, there is still a considerable amount of snow on the upper portions of the ski slopes at Winter Park (visible in the distance). The westbound Zephyr pulls in to Fraser about 15 minutes late for a quick station stop.

There are two words that most (outdoor) photographers really hate hearing: "Partly Cloudy". This particular morning had clouds drifting through the sky, randomly casting shadows. This scene of the Zephyr heading west at Tabernash had been bright a sun just five minutes earlier, and would return to bright and sunny about two minutes after the passing of the Zephyr!

The Zephyr had a special car on the tail end on this morning. The "Cyrus K Holliday" was headed west. This private car was built in 1921 and is owned by the San Diego Trust and Savings Company. Cyrus Holliday was one of the founders of Topeka, KS, a general in the American Civil War, and the first president of the Atchison, Topeka, and Santa Fe Railway.

With the westbound Zephyr now west of Tabernash, the EMD special can start its testing. In this shot, all the UP power is throttled up and pulling the train toward the east end of the siding. The EMD prototypes are isolated from the UP power (meaning they are being controlled independently by someone in the cab) and not currently loading.

Exhaust from the one unit that isn't at least Tier-3 compliant (the GE AC4400CW) drifts a bit through the frame as the two SD70ACe-T4 prototypes head east for testing. Random fact of the day: If Baseline Road in Boulder were to continue west of Boulder in a straight line over the Continental Divide, it would cut through this picture. It was go over the closest hill in the distance and cross the tracks back and to the left.

As the special passes by the east switch of Tabernash, the SD70ACe-T4s are starting to load (pull) as the UP units start to throttle down. Shortly after this shot, the UP units will be in full dynamics and the new Tier-4 EMDs will be pulling up the grade.

Just east of the east switch of Fraser finds EMD's testing special on the roll, slowly, up the grade. All the UP units in this shot are in full dynamics while the two EMD prototypes are in Run 8. The purpose of the testing is to check the units performance at high altitude, to see how much exhaust is produced when fully loaded and pulling, and test their performance at low speeds. The consist here is only making 12 MPH.

Even though the EMD prototypes are not particularly visible in this shot, I still consider this the "shot of day"! EMD's testing special is creeping along at 12 MPH as it enters into the west portal of the Moffat Tunnel. The Winter Park ski resort has shut down for the season. The green pipe to the left is a water pipe that goes through the Moffat Water Tunnel (which parallels the train tunnel). It carries water to the Denver area from the west slope of the divide and was a key reason the train tunnel was built.

Even though there is no apparent exhaust, both these EMD prototypes are in Run 8 and pulling hard. From the outside, it looks like the Tier-4 emissions are working out for EMD. Upon reaching East Portal, the consist will wait for the tunnel to vent, and then make a return trip back west to Winter Park.

If you position yourself just right, you can look straight down into the bore of the Moffat Tunnel from just outside the lodge at the Winter Park Ski Resort. The headlight for this train was visible when it was still three miles away! It is simply amazing that the tunnel was built nearly 100 years ago, in the 1920s.

A 400mm lens comes in extremely handy sometimes! Here is a look at an oncoming train as it approaches the west end of the 6.2 mile long Moffat Tunnel.

EMD's testing special emerges from the west portal of the Moffat Tunnel into Winter Park. The signal on the left side of the frame is a repeater for the signal at the east switch of Winter Park. This repeater allows crews to see the condition of the east switch well in advance when still in the tunnel.

The first test run of the day has just about been completed for EMD's SD70ACe-T4s. The consist will pull down and on to the main at Winter Park where the crew will grab a bite to eat and prepare to go east. Then, they will take the train back through the tunnel and over to East Portal.
