UP 1995, leading a westbound coal empty, sits idle on Bypass 1 as a unit potash train rolls east on Bypass 2. After being recrewed, the potash train will continue east on the Belt Industrial Lead, which is why it is on Bypass 2 and not on Main 3, which would take it into North Yard.

The signal bridge at C&S Jct spans four tracks, protecting Bypass 1 and 2 turning in to Main 1, and Main 3 and the North Yard siding turning in to Main 2. A westbound coal empty, with UP 1995, sits on Bypass 1 alongside the Clear Creek Federal commuter rail station, waiting for a crew to take it west.

UP's crew change point for westbounds that come across one of the two bypass tracks is at C&S Jct. this happens to lie right next to the Clear Creek Federal commuter rail station. UP 1995 and a pair of GEs sit without a crew on Bypass 1, ready to head west when a crew becomes available.

Looking at a Red

UP 1995 is sitting on Bypass 1 at C&S Jct, looking at a red signal. The train is waiting for a rested crew to become available to take the train west over the Moffat. From left-to-right, the other tracks in the frame are Bypass 2, Main 3, and the North Yard Siding.

Love it when one of UP's six Heritage Units comes to Denver. On this Sunday afternoon, UP 1995 is set up to lead a coal empty west when a crew becomes rested.

The Zephyr heads for the Colorado Rockies on a clear, crisp winter morning! These types of mornings are among my favorite.

Another shot looking east as the Zephyr approaching Lowell Street. The eastbound signals at C&S moved significantly west when Main 2 was constructed.

The westbound Zephyr passes through the (rather long OS) at C&S Junction on Main 2. UP DS-86 uses Main 2 when possible between C&S and Arvada right now due to work on the commuter rail line right next to Main 1. That said, there is a Form B on both tracks past the limits of the work zone.

Until the new main track is actually put in service (expected to be May 2012 at the time of this photo), the new switches at C&S Junction are hand-throw. So, when BNSF's Beer Train comes through, a UP guy on the ground has to manually throw both sides of the crossover (from Main 1 to Main 2), the switch from Main 2 to the Golden Branch and the Derail on the Golden Branch. Here, you can see the Beer Run crossing over from Main 1 to Main 2 and you can also see that the Derail has been properly aligned in the foreground.

Once the new main track is completed between C&S Junction and Arvada, C&S Junction is going to become a long OS. In other words, there is going to be a great distance between the eastbound and westbound signals. The distance between signals will be nearly a half a mile! Here, BNSF's Beer Train departs from Main 3 in the distance as the yet-to-be-activated new signal for Main 1 stands facing the side in the foreground.
