An eastbound BNSF manifest holds in the siding at Leyden due to a switch malfunction at Fox Jct. When DS-86 attempted to throw the switch, it failed halfway through is throwing motion, leaving the points centered and no route aligned! The switch could not even be taken into hand throw. So, unable to reach the yard, the Provo-Denver waits! (I am not sure why the train couldn't cross over to BNSF's main at Utah Jct and run through Rennicks to Prospect Jct.)

It's been awhile since I had seen an SD9043MAC on the Moffat! UP has sold off much of their SD9043MAC fleet in the last few years. In fact, one such SD9043MAC went from UP to CIT Leasing (and Indiana Railroad) and now to Norfolk Southern. It is the third unit on this Denver-Provo at Leyden...light quickly fading.

Normally, I wouldn't bother trying to get a shot in such extreme low-light conditions. However, with SD9043MACs all but gone from US railroads, I figured it was worth it! This SD9043MAC went from UP to Indiana Railroad. The shortline received four of these (on lease) from CIT Leasing in July 2016. It was either a very short lease, or Indiana Railroad was not happy with the units. Whatever the reason, Norfolk Southern bought them and, as you can see, patched them. But for now, they are still in Indiana Railroad colors. So this was an interesting catch worth the low-light conditions!

Apologies for the grainly/low-light shot here. It is nearly a half hour past sunset as this BNSF Denver-Provo manifest heads slowly west at Leyden. The train would have arrived much sooner (and with more light), but it developed engine problems after leaving Denver and creeped up and in to Leyden at 10 MPH. The train will stop ahead between switches to figure out the problem.

This eastbound BNSF manifest, with five ES44DCs (well, the last two units are ES44C4s), is headed east through Leyden on a clear signal. Soon, the Grand Junction based crew will arrive in Denver and begin their rest period before taking a westbound manifest back home to Grand Junction.

When I was a kid, it was commonplace to see railroads running trains in which the engines all had the same paint scheme. After the merger frenzy of the 1990s, paint schemes became a jumbled grab bag of whose-was-who. It has finally been long enough...twenty years later...that it becoming more and more common to see trains in which all engines wear the same scheme. Case-in-point is this eastbound BNSF manifest with a match set of five ES44DCs.

A quintet of ES44DCs lead the eastbound BNSF Provo-Denver manifest down the main at Leyden on a snowy January morning. Based on the plow, looks like there is even better snow in the high country.

As quickly as the two trains (Amtrak and this coal train) showed up, they are both gone! Some good dispatching kept both trains moving and silence prepares to settle back in. Unsure about just how slow the Moffat is right now? These would be the last two trains through Leyden until after sunset!

The typical view for an eastbound coal train on the Moffat! A trio of mid-train swing helpers. UP has pretty well standardized the practice of running coal...two engines on the point, three in the middle, and one on the end from the mines to Denver. Then, cut out the three in the middle and run east with two on the point and one on the rear.

The tail end of this coal load has just cleared the west switch at Leyden. DS-86 is in the process of throwing the switch and setting up a signal for the Zephyr. The coal train has also received a clear signal at the east end of Leyden, and the mid-train swing helpers are actually throttling up a few notches to accelerate a little.

As both trains in this shot were moving (and both relatively slowly), I was not sure if I was going to get the power on this eastbound coal train. Fortunately, the last Superliner of the Zephyr got out of the way just in time to reveal both units on the point of the coal train.

UP's DS-86 set up great rolling meet at Leyden between the westbound Zephyr (on the main) and an eastbound coal load (on the siding). If you are unfamiliar with the term "rolling meet", this refers to two trains meeting at siding in which neither train actually has to come to a stop. By the time the coal train reached the east end of the siding, they had a clear signal. Same thing for the Zephyr at the west end.

The westbound Zephyr sports an old baggage car and seven Superliners on this chilly morning. Seven Superliners are common in the winter months as that tends to be Amtrak's slow time of year.

I love winter in Colorado. Actually, I love all seasons in Colorado. Getting the heat radiating off a coal train through a telephoto lens at Leyden is great in July when it is 95°F out. Then again, it is also wonderful getting a shot of the Zephyr as it kicks up snow clouds in January when it is -5°F out!

I can say with total honesty that I would have been very happy to have been on the inside of the Zephyr on this morning. The temperature in this shot had not yet reached 0°F! 6-12 inches of the white stuff fell over the previous two days. Now, the clouds cleared out, meaning the temperatures plummeted.
