AMTK 174, the only Phase 7 P42DC (as of the time of this picture) leads Amtrak's Winter Park Express west at Leyden. Snow is lightly falling and the train is kicking up some snow of its own as it charges west at track speed.

The westbound Zephyr is moving at track speed as it approaches a clear (green) signal at the west end of Leyden. The Zephyr is still sporting the typical seven Superliner consist that it has generally had throughout the winter.

On a chilly, overcast January morning, the westbound Zephyr passes by a string of empty well cars that were seemingly placed in storage the previous day here in the siding at Leyden.

A look down in to the inside of an empty well car sitting in storage on the siding at Leyden. As you can see, most well cars do not have a solid base, but rather are mostly open. They only need enough strength to support the containers placed in them. This patchwork is sturdy, yet keeps the overall car weight much lighter as less steel is used.

An eastbound UP oil train cruises down the main at Leyden. Note the switches on the siding signifying either end of the house track. I was particularly happy to get this angle as my dad took a picture from nearly the same location roughly 45 years earlier of an eastbound Rio Grande train.

A pair of ES44ACs bring up the tail end of BNSF's Provo-Denver as it glides by on the main at Leyden. Unfortunately, the last unit was facing in to the train, so its a shot of the long hood and tail end as it rolls away from the camera.

Typically, the manifest trains BNSF runs on the Moffat, whether east or west, run with a 3x2 configuration. On this particular day, the Provo-Denver has six units on the head end. Although a few of them are just catching a ride on the train and are not actually loading.

BNSF's Provo-Denver is rolling east at Leyden on the main track. Partly cloudy conditions block the sun, helping create a real winter feel, despite the lack of snow in the foreground.

With daylight savings time now ended and the winter solstice quickly approaching, the days are short but the light quality is fantastic! A pair of DPUs bringing up the rear of an oil train case long shadows on the hill behind the train as it rolls east toward Denver and beyond.

Western Arvada has exploded in the last few decades. In 1995, there were a few houses and farms in this shot along with the tracks. But little else! Today, Leyden is right in the heart of suburban Arvada. An loaded UP oil train glides through the houses on the main at Leyden.

Near the east end of Leyden, an eastbound BNSF manifest is holding the main at Leyden. The exact reason for stopping was not apparent as the train had an Advanced Approach (flashing yellow) signal at the east end of Leyden. Meanwhile, a rather significant thunderstorm has formed over the Rockies and is moving out on to the plains in the distance.

The westbound Zephyr meets an eastbound BNSF coal empty at Leyden. It seems somewhat ironic that Union Pacific owns the tracks here (and handles the dispatching), yet neither train pictures is UP.
