Major forest fires in the Pacific Northwest are creating smoke that is resulting in the Denver-Metro area being very hazy. The east end Leyden is designated as CP DS012 by Union Pacific (as you can see on the signs by the signals). The "DS" represents "Denver & Salt Lake", David Moffat's railroad that predated Rio Grande. The "12", of course, indicates we are 12 miles west of Denver Union Station. The train is leaving Leyden behind and is crossing the 80th Avenue grade crossing. This is the only grade crossing between North Yard and Leyden that is not a quiet zone crossing. The train is just east of Leyden, crossing over Church Ditch, a man-made irrigation ditch that originates from Clear Creek in Golden.
