An eastbound UP Grand Junction to North Yard manifest, comprised mainly of covered hoppers, is stopped in the siding at Rocky. It'll wait here for the next 45 minutes or so, waiting on the arrival of the morning westbound Zephyr, just departing Union Station at the time of this picture.

It is a little hazy in the Denver-Metro area this morning as the Zephyr rushes away from the Denver skyline, toward a clear (green) signal at the east switch of Leyden.

With roughly three weeks left in summer, this shot already has a pretty decent fall feel to it, particularly with the sun flowers lining the right of way. The Zephyr just knocked down a clear (green) signal at the east end of Leyden. AMTK 171 and AMTK 170 have been the power on this Zephyr trainset for the past few weeks now.

After meeting the Zephyr at Rocky, this MGJNY is headed east on the main at Leyden. The train likely has more empties than loads, as the two GEs on the point are the only two units on the train.

Since the Dotsero Cutoff was completed in the summer of 1934, the owner of the line (Rio Grande, Southern Pacific, and Union Pacific) ran manifests between Denver and Salt Lake City. That is, until December 2018 when UP ran the last MRONY (Roper, UT to North Yard, CO). Amazing it has been almost six years since then! Now, UP runs a manifest three days a week between Denver and Grand Junction (and back). Here, the eastbound version of the MGJNY is leaving the east end of Leyden.
