In 1995, there were a few houses and farms in this shot along with the tracks. But little else! Today, Leyden is right in the heart of suburban Arvada. The exact reason for stopping was not apparent as the train had an Advanced Approach (flashing yellow) signal at the east end of Leyden. Meanwhile, a rather significant thunderstorm has formed over the Rockies and is moving out on to the plains in the distance. This coal train is rather unusual though in that it is empty! When coal trains do (and did) run on the Moffat, typically eastbounds are loaded, after loading at a mine in the Rockies. BNSF's 31st Street Yard had no room for the train, so it was tied down in the siding here. A BNSF crew will be dispatched to retrieve it once room opens up. The conductor is looking for any obvious issues on the outside of the train that could be a safety issue, such as dragging equipment. This particular GP15-1 rolled off the EMD floor in July 1977 as Missouri Pacific 1603. After the UP/MP merger, it spent a number of years as UP 1603, before finally being renumbered to UPY 603. Today is the first day of the 2023 season for the Rocky Mountaineer. The manifest will only have to wait about five minutes for the passenger train. The dispatcher is currently throwing the switch at the west end of Leyden and setting up a clear (green) signal for the Zephyr to proceed west. AMTK 203 is painted in a special "Operation Lifesaver" scheme, celebrating the 50th Anniversary of the program. Amtrak unveiled the paint scheme about a year ago, in January 2022.
