UP's MGJNY includes a visitor from the east today! The third unit on the manifest is a Norfolk Southern SD70ACe, #1010. Always great to catch a foreign visitor to change up the colors a bit.

A rather colorful P42DC, AMTK 203, leads the westbound Zephyr west on the siding at Leyden. The train will be meeting UP's eastbound MGJNY here. Fortunately, the manifest is about to knock down the signal at the west end, so the delay to Amtrak will be quite minimal.

AMTK 203 is painted in a special "Operation Lifesaver" scheme, celebrating the 50th Anniversary of the program. Amtrak unveiled the paint scheme about a year ago, in January 2022.

A single SD70AH - given such a designation because it is four tons heavier than an SD70ACe for added traction - brings up the tail end of an eastbound coal load on the main at Leyden.

A trio of SD70ACes have been cut in as the mid-train swing helpers on this eastbound coal load. Upon reaching North Yard, it will be up to the head end crew to cut these units out and deliver them to the fuel tracks. Up until a few years ago, this would have been the job of hostlers based at North Yard. However, UP eliminated all the hostler positions in 2018.

A pair of AC4400CWs leads an eastbound coal load on the main at Leyden. Fall colors are still about a month away from becoming common place in the Denver-Metro area. Once the most commonplace of all trains on the Moffat, coal trains have fallen in to relative obscurity these days.

Fall colors are slowly starting to appear in the Arvada neighborhood of Five Parks, the backdrop for a meet between the Rocky Mountaineer on the main and a unit oil train stopped on the siding.

UP 8448, an SD70ACe on the main, passes by BNSF 3737, an ET44C4 on the siding, at Leyden. BNSF does not have room in the yard for their train, but UP's North Yard is ready to receive the Grand Junction manifest, so it will continue rolling out the east end of Leyden.

It may be a week until the official start of summer, but temperatures are reaching 100°F (38°C) here in mid-June. The eastbound MGJNY rolls east on the main at Leyden, passing by a tied down BNSF Provo-Denver. Five red HLCX leased GP38-2s are being take to Denver on the train.

BNSF currently does not have any room in the yard for the Provo-Denver. Consequently, the train has been tied down in the siding. A van came and picked up the crew and here the train will wait until there is room in the yard and a relief crew can be sent out to the train. Of note, a relatively new ET44C4 is on the point.

A Ferromex SD70ACe is sandwiched in between two BNSF C44-9Ws, both still sporting the Heritage 2 paint scheme. The train is slowing to a stop on the siding at Leyden. It will wait for a UP coal empty to come out of town and meet it here. The wait will not be long as the empty is leaving Arvada, a few miles to the east, at this time.

An up close and personal look at the Microsoft Train Simulator decal that was applied to the nose of BNSF 4723 over 20 years ago. Somewhat amazingly, the sticker has withstood the test of time, still clearly visible and with a pretty darn good color match as well.

20 years ago, in May 2001, Microsoft released Microsoft Train Simulator. It was a great game for its time, and it feature BNSF's High Line over Marias Pass. On the cover of the box was BNSF 4723. BNSF actually added a decal to the cab to advertise the game. That sticker has persisted for 20 years. This is actually the first time I've been able to get a shot of it!

Hot on the heals of UP's Grand Junction to North Yard manifest, which rolled through a few minutes earlier, is BNSF's Provo-Denver. Unlike the MGJNY, which had greens down the main, the Provo-Denver is slowing in the siding. It will be meeting a westbound UP coal empty, getting ready to come out of Denver.

On a crystal clear June day, UP's Grand Junction to North Yard manifest rolls down the main at Leyden on a Clear (green) signal. The tracks here parallel 82nd Avenue on either side. There is (obviously) no bridge to connect 82nd Avenue over the tracks, so it continues east on the north side of the tracks and west on the south side of the tracks. There have been talks of building a bridge over the tracks here that would connect Alkire Street. So far, those have indeed only been talks.
