UP 8448, an SD70ACe on the main, passes by BNSF 3737, an ET44C4 on the siding, at Leyden. BNSF does not have room in the yard for their train, but UP's North Yard is ready to receive the Grand Junction manifest, so it will continue rolling out the east end of Leyden.

It may be a week until the official start of summer, but temperatures are reaching 100°F (38°C) here in mid-June. The eastbound MGJNY rolls east on the main at Leyden, passing by a tied down BNSF Provo-Denver. Five red HLCX leased GP38-2s are being take to Denver on the train.

Roster shot of the "latest and greatest" to come out of GE's factories. An ET44C4 leads the eastbound Provo-Denver, currently in the siding at Leyden.

BNSF currently does not have any room in the yard for the Provo-Denver. Consequently, the train has been tied down in the siding. A van came and picked up the crew and here the train will wait until there is room in the yard and a relief crew can be sent out to the train. Of note, a relatively new ET44C4 is on the point.

A Ferromex SD70ACe is sandwiched in between two BNSF C44-9Ws, both still sporting the Heritage 2 paint scheme. The train is slowing to a stop on the siding at Leyden. It will wait for a UP coal empty to come out of town and meet it here. The wait will not be long as the empty is leaving Arvada, a few miles to the east, at this time.

An up close and personal look at the Microsoft Train Simulator decal that was applied to the nose of BNSF 4723 over 20 years ago. Somewhat amazingly, the sticker has withstood the test of time, still clearly visible and with a pretty darn good color match as well.

20 years ago, in May 2001, Microsoft released Microsoft Train Simulator. It was a great game for its time, and it feature BNSF's High Line over Marias Pass. On the cover of the box was BNSF 4723. BNSF actually added a decal to the cab to advertise the game. That sticker has persisted for 20 years. This is actually the first time I've been able to get a shot of it!

Hot on the heals of UP's Grand Junction to North Yard manifest, which rolled through a few minutes earlier, is BNSF's Provo-Denver. Unlike the MGJNY, which had greens down the main, the Provo-Denver is slowing in the siding. It will be meeting a westbound UP coal empty, getting ready to come out of Denver.

On a crystal clear June day, UP's Grand Junction to North Yard manifest rolls down the main at Leyden on a Clear (green) signal. The tracks here parallel 82nd Avenue on either side. There is (obviously) no bridge to connect 82nd Avenue over the tracks, so it continues east on the north side of the tracks and west on the south side of the tracks. There have been talks of building a bridge over the tracks here that would connect Alkire Street. So far, those have indeed only been talks.

A quartet of elephant-style units lead UP's MGJNY at Leyden down the main. Note that the second unit out is an SD70M. There was a time, 15 years ago or so, when SD70Ms were common placed on manifest. These days, however, they have become a bit of a novelty, at least in Colorado.

As UP's eastbound Grand Junction to North Yard manifest approaches on the main at Leyden, another eastbound is visible in the shot. If you look closely, you'll notice a dark (black-ish) stripe running across the mountain off in the distance. This is BNSF's Provo-Denver, following the MGJNY just a few miles behind.

Up close and personal! BNSF 5368 sits idling away on a tied down Provo-Denver in the siding at Leyden. The train is patiently waiting for a fresh crew, which will show up in about three hours and take the train in to Denver.

If you've ever heard of someone in the train world referring to a derail (as a noun, not a verb), this is an example of what they are talking about. This type of derail has a single switch point that would align anything that ran through it to derail. This is a form of protection to prevent cars or tied down trains from inadvertently rolling out on to the main track. This derail was installed at the east end of the siding at Leyden about 15 years ago, when coal trains were often being tied down to wait for recrews and/or yard tracks.

From nearly 300 feet in the air, you can get a great perspective of the Moffat at Leyden. If you were to go back 30 years, at least 50% of the houses that you can see in this shot were not there. Indeed, Ralston Valley High School was not there either! It was built right around the year 2000, becoming the city of Arvada's fourth high school. Meanwhile, the Provo-Denver sits in the siding awaiting a recrew.

BNSF's Provo-Denver arrived in the siding here at Leyden almost three hours earlier. The train was tied down and the derail at the east end of the siding was set. A relief crew showed up a few hours later to untie the train and take it the remaining 12 miles in to Denver.
