An eastbound UP coal load, which is a little shorter (78 cars) than coal trains traditionally found on the Moffat, approaches the east end of Barbara's Gulch between Rocky and Leyden.

Four GEs lead an eastbound UP coal load past the intermediate at MP 14.6. Coal trains typically have a 2x3x1 configuration. However, those coal trains are typically 105-110 cars. This coal train is only 78 cars, so the power is set up in a 4x2 configuration.

UP 5978 crosses over Indiana Street on the approach to the west end of Leyden. The bridge over Indiana still displays it's "Rio Grande" lettering. This bridge's days are certainly numbered as the City of Arvada would like to widen Indiana to four lanes. Doing this will (obviously) necessitate a new bridge. With that said, funding is not available for the project, so for now, the bridge is not in imminent danger.

BNSF's Provo-Denver is rolling east at Leyden on the main track. Partly cloudy conditions block the sun, helping create a real winter feel, despite the lack of snow in the foreground.

Typically, the manifest trains BNSF runs on the Moffat, whether east or west, run with a 3x2 configuration. On this particular day, the Provo-Denver has six units on the head end. Although a few of them are just catching a ride on the train and are not actually loading.

A pair of ES44ACs bring up the tail end of BNSF's Provo-Denver as it glides by on the main at Leyden. Unfortunately, the last unit was facing in to the train, so its a shot of the long hood and tail end as it rolls away from the camera.
