The eastbound Zephyr has sped up to track speed and is meeting a westbound BNSF manifest (the Denver-Provo) at Leyden. Two private cars bring up the tail end of Amtrak, almost disguising the train true identity.

This westbound BNSF Denver-Provo has to run in and out of the siding at Leyden in order to get around some maintenance equipment that was holding the main. Indeed, you can see some of the maintenance in the distance. The train is crossing over Indiana Street on a bridge the city of Arvada is hoping to replace in order to widen Indiana Street from two to four lanes.

The westbound Zephyr, led by AMTK 203, is departing the siding at Leyden to continue the journey west after meeting an eastbound UP manifest. If you look in the distance, you can see the sole DPU unit bringing up the rear of UP's MGJNY on the main.

AMTK 203 is painted in a special "Operation Lifesaver" scheme, celebrating the 50th Anniversary of the program. Amtrak unveiled the paint scheme about a year ago, in January 2022.

The westbound Zephyr has a clear (green) signal! Highball! After meeting an eastbound UP manifest, the engineer has released the brakes, kicked in the throttle, and the train is now rolling west.

The only (regularly scheduled) manifest that UP still runs on the Moffat is a thrice weekly (each direction) MGJNY, running between North Yard in Denver and Grand Junction (and back). The train is typically called (at either yard) sometime around 7pm, so it is almost always a nighttime run. However, on occasion, the eastbound train will descend the Front Range in daylight. Such is the case here.

The signal at the west end of Leyden is showing an approach signal (yellow over red). An eastbound UP manifest is approaching the signal from the west. The westbound Zephyr is about to enter the siding at the east end of Leyden to meet the manifest.

The westbound Zephyr is about 15 minutes late as it passes the west end of Leyden and crosses over Indiana Avenue in Arvada. The 3-4 inches of fresh snow that fell two days earlier still blankets most of the ground as temperatures have barely made it up to freezing.

A pair of GEs slowly creep in to the siding at Leyden on the tail end of a long unit oil train. Once in the clear, DS-78 will align the west switch at Leyden to the main and the Rocky Mountaineer, whose headlight is visible in the distance, will get a clear (green) signal and head west.

Two-thirds of the marriage that many railfans wished had happened, but never did. There was once hope that Missouri Pacific, Rio Grande, and Western Pacific would merge to create a single railroad that would have stretched from the gulf coast and Kansas City to the Pacific. Alas, that never happened...although all three would ultimately become part of Union Pacific! Here, UP 1982, the MP Heritage Unit, crosses over Indiana Street and the bridge that still sports "Rio Grande" in fly letters.

A pair of ES44ACs bring up the tail end of the first of two BNSF Provo-Denver manifests that would end up running east on the Moffat today. This one has a straight shot down to C&S Junction. There, it will hold for the westbound Zephyr, which is ready to depart Union Station right on time at 8:05am.

So GECX 4823 was clearly BNSF 4823. At it appears that the sale to GECX was extremely recent. I found a picture of BNSF 4823 (still as BNSF) in a shot from August 2020 in Iowa. Granted, that shot had it in a deadline, for perhaps it was sold directly from there in the last few months to GECX. Kinda interesting how BNSF sells off a unit like this, only to then pay to lease it back!

A nice, elevated shot of a long Provo-Denver heading east down the main at Leyden. Note the new construction to the left of the train, including a new "Kum & Go" gas station that just opened a week ago. The houses to the left of the train make up the neighborhoods of Five Parks and Whisper Creek. Construction on Five Parks took place around 2000, and Whisper Creek around 2005. In the distance is man-made Stanley Lake. Because the lake is downwind from the former Rocky Flats - a plant that used to build triggers for nuclear bombs - locals often joke that Stanley Lake is home to three-headed fish and glowing plants.

As a ballast train backs down on to the siding at Leyden, you can clearly see the bottleneck the bridge at Indiana Street has created in west Arvada! There is a desire to widen the road to four lanes here, but that will not happen unless and until the bridge can be replaced to accommodate four lanes.

An ES44AC, ET44AC, and AC4400CW back a Herzog ballast train down in to the siding at Leyden. One of the units on the train failed as it was coming through Arvada. Not wanting to block any grade crossing, the train pulled between switches on the main at Leyden and dropped off the conductor. It then pulled west of Leyden and is now backing down on the siding. The train will be cut in half and the front half will be taken west to dump ballast.

As the westbound Zephyr accelerates west out of Leyden and over Indiana Street, it should be noted that this is a scene that continue to change and indeed has the potential to change even more in the coming years. New houses are being built on the north side of the tracks. Indeed, the classic Rio Grande bridge over Indiana Street may be living on borrowed time. There is a push to widen Indiana Street from two lanes to four lanes through here. That would necessitate a slight grade realignment for a new, wider bridge. There currently is no funding for the project, so, for now, the old bridge is safe.
