The bridge over Indiana still displays it's "Rio Grande" lettering. This bridge's days are certainly numbered as the City of Arvada would like to widen Indiana to four lanes. Doing this will (obviously) necessitate a new bridge. With that said, funding is not available for the project, so for now, the bridge is not in imminent danger. Most of the homes in this shot are part of "Five Parks", now the fourth-newest major residential development on the west side of Arvada. Many citizens in west Arvada want Indiana Street to be widened to four lanes to accommodate traffic growth. With a little bit of time made up, the Zephyr is just over 90 minutes late as it blasts west on the main at Leyden on a beautiful November morning. The train crosses Indiana Street, currently two lanes. There are plans to expand this stretch of Indiana Street to four lanes, but the bridge the track run on would have to be rebuilt to accommodate the additional lanes. Indeed, you can see some of the maintenance in the distance. The train is crossing over Indiana Street on a bridge the city of Arvada is hoping to replace in order to widen Indiana Street from two to four lanes. If you look in the distance, you can see the sole DPU unit bringing up the rear of UP's MGJNY on the main. AMTK 203 is painted in a special "Operation Lifesaver" scheme, celebrating the 50th Anniversary of the program. Amtrak unveiled the paint scheme about a year ago, in January 2022. The train is typically called (at either yard) sometime around 7pm, so it is almost always a nighttime run. However, on occasion, the eastbound train will descend the Front Range in daylight. The 3-4 inches of fresh snow that fell two days earlier still blankets most of the ground as temperatures have barely made it up to freezing.
