As a result, Class 1 railroads have largely started rebuilding older locomotives as rebuilds are not subject to the same standards. It is cheaper than buying Tier-4 compliant locomotives, which, even after their initial sticker price, are more expensive (and more complicated) to maintain. You can see the photo that I am referring to, taken at the west switch of Leyden. Getting the westbound Zephyr at this same spot today felt like a nice way to book end the year. It was a record-setting year for ColoradoRailfan. I added 1,627 photos to my site, obliterating the previous record of 1,060 that I set in 2023. The Zephyr just overtook a westbound oil train, and you can see the conductor from the oil train headed back to the cab of the lead unit after giving the Zephyr a roll by.
