A westbound Denver-Provo departs the siding at Leyden after meeting an oil train. The train is crossing the bridge at MP 13.35, the bridge over Indiana Street. Eventually, this bridge will likely be rebuilt to accommodate the widening of Indiana Street from two lanes to (at least) four.

As the eastbound oil train rolls away from the camera on the main track at Leyden, a westbound BNSF manifest (the Denver to Provo) has turned its lights back on full and is ready to depart west as soon as DS-380 aligns the switch and gets a light for the train.

The California Zephyr blasts out of the west end of Leyden, right around track speed at 60 MPH. The Zephyr just overtook a westbound oil train, and you can see the conductor from the oil train headed back to the cab of the lead unit after giving the Zephyr a roll by.

Earlier this morning, this westbound oil empty stalled out on the climb out of Rocky up Big Ten. The train stalled out and the conductor walked back to the end DPU. The conductor protected a reverse move back into the siding here at Leyden.

The westbound Zephyr charges west on the main at Leyden. It's nice to see that the siding at Leyden is once again empty and available for meets after a string of empty well cars were stored there for close to five months! Well cars were tied down there early on the morning of January 3, 2024. Overnight on May 27, 2024, they were picked up and taken back to Denver.

Someone once said the only thing that stays the same is change. For the past few months, UP has periodically been running this coal empty eastbound on the Moffat. Once arriving in Denver, the train will head north on the Greeley Sub and eventually the Yoder Sub, making its way to the Power River Basin where it will load. The loaded train will head west through Wyoming on the Overland Route. Note the red flag that UP has put up on the siding at Leyden, protecting the empty well cars that have been stored for over four months now.

After arriving 12 1/2 hours late in Chicago, it took Amtrak a little time to get the train ready for the trip west. It departed Chicago nearly five hours late the previous day, and departed Denver just over five hours late today. Here, clouds are keeping the train in shadows as it leaves west out of Leyden.

An eastbound UP manifest has a single ES44AC as a trailing DPU as the train rolls down the main at Leyden. The DPU is crossing over Indiana Street, a road that the City of Arvada would like to widen to four lanes, but will require the replacement of this bridge as it is only wide enough for the current two lanes.

A massive string of empty well cars, measuring around 6,400 feet, was taken out to Leyden (from Denver) by UP early in the pre-dawn hours of January 3. The power cut off and returned light to Denver. It would appear that UP is planning to keep them in long term storage here at Leyden!

On a temperate morning on the first day of 2024, the westbound Zephyr is on time as it knocks down a clear (green) signal at the west end of Leyden. Folks who have been on the train since yesterday enjoyed spending New Year's on Amtrak.

UP 5978 crosses over Indiana Street on the approach to the west end of Leyden. The bridge over Indiana still displays it's "Rio Grande" lettering. This bridge's days are certainly numbered as the City of Arvada would like to widen Indiana to four lanes. Doing this will (obviously) necessitate a new bridge. With that said, funding is not available for the project, so for now, the bridge is not in imminent danger.
