The westbound Zephyr knocks down a clear signal at the intermediate at MP 14.6 just west of Leyden. It was a foggy morning and I was hoping to pick up some streaks in the fog from the headlight and signal. You can see the headlights a bit, but it wasn't quite foggy enough to capture more.

Lately a lot of coal empties headed west have had six or seven engines...enough for their mid-train swing helpers on the trip back east. This train, however, only had two on the point and one on the rear. So it will pick up three units either in Grand Junction or in Glenwood Springs after it is loaded.

A single SD70ACe brings up the tail end of this West Elk coal empty as the train passes by the old coaling tower near Chem Spur.

An SD70ACe and ES44AC lead a coal empty westbound. The train is approaching the switch to the Chem Spur. The train is headed for the West Elk mine on the North Fork Branch in Western Colorado.

The second coal empty in as many days heads west toward the east end of Barbara's Gulch. I've lucked out lately with SD70ACes on the Moffat! UP 8768 leads an ES44AC on the train westbound.

A trio of EMD power (SD70ACe, SD70MAC, SD70ACe) leads this westbound loaded sand train past the old Mesa Oil plant located between Leyden and Rocky.

The westbound Zephyr has two extra cars it is giving a ride to! The Silver Rapids and the Silver Solarium came in to Denver on the eastbound Zephyr the previous Friday. Today, they are headed back home to California.

On a partly cloudy February morning, the westbound Zephyr approaches a clear signal at the intermediate at MP 14.5. The Zephyr is just about to receive a slow order from the dispatcher. Trains are limited to 10 MPH around Big Ten Loop at the moment due to very high winds. An occurrence not at all uncommon!

The westbound Zephyr is running about 25 minutes behind schedule because it had to pick up two private cars that spent the weekend in Denver.

A single SD70ACe brings up the tail end of an eastbound coal load. the train is passing by a grove of thistle plants...well, if grove is the right term. A whole lot of thistle! On the opposite side of the tracks is the neighborhood of Leyden Rock.

Even though this coal load only has 91 cars, it had four mid-train swing helpers! Interesting that they just happen to be set up elephant style!

A slightly different view between Leyden and Rocky as we are west of the intermediate at MP 14.5. If you look closely, you'll note that the entire train is visible, with the tail end DPU just to the left of the lead unit in the distance.

Man, I sure wouldn't mind having one of these houses in the neighborhood of Leyden Rocky! Great view of the Moffat, including a trio of GP40-2s accelerating west toward Rocky (and the Rocky Spur). The yellow Penske truck you see is on CO-72.

Under mostly cloudy (albeit thin clouds) skies, a westbound BNSF sand train slowly makes its way out of Leyden on the Moffat. BNSF is actually doing a lot to keep traffic levels on the Moffat up, and to keep a bit of variety running, too.
