The P42DC that led the train in to Denver shut down. In need of a second unit for the trip west. AMTK 156 was taken from the Winter Park Express Ski Train on Track 5. It's been awhile since I happened to catch a coal train on the Moffat. Production at the mines seems to go through peaks and valleys and things have been in a bit of a valley lately, with fewer coal trains out and running. The train is just west of Leyden, running parallel to CO-72 on the far side of the tracks and the neighborhood of Leyden Rock on this side of the tracks. After about ten days of very cold temperatures, things are starting to warm up with temperatures around 40°F. A BNSF Provo-Lincoln manifest heads toward the west switch at Leyden. Like its ES44C4 ancestor, this unit is an A1A-A1A unit, with only the outside axles on either truck being powered. This is a specification that BNSF is absolutely in love with. Highball! On occasion, BNSF manifests will get stuck at Leyden if the yard in Denver has no room for them. Fortunately for the crew today, the yard was ready and the train got a straight shot in. The train had an ET44C4 on the head end as well, although this is one of the very early versions of the ET44C4. You can tell as the second of long hood just ahead of the radiator housing is very boxy. In later versions of the model, that housing that sticks up is contoured to look a bit more natural with the rest of the radiator.
