A single CSX ES44AC brings up the tail end of an eastbound coal train under partly cloudy skies. In the background, a tower stands on the grounds of the Ralston Development Corporation. The company is an alternative fuel research company, though I am unsure exactly what the tower is used for.

Under some pretty cool looking clouds, this westbound coal empty passes by the new Arvada neighborhood of Leyden Rock. This was nothing but a field five years ago, and now these houses are not only finished, but have people living in them!

This coal train is headed for the Energy Mine on the Craig Branch. It has six units on the point for the trip west. They will be reconfigured 2x3x1 for the trip back east. The first and sixth units are both CSX, meaning the train should have CSX power on the point both directions!

On a cloudy afternoon, a westbound coal empty passes the intermediate west of Leyden with a CSX ES44AH on the point. This is an occurrence that has become somewhat common place lately! Colorado Mines must've worked to pick up more eastern coal contracts.

Amtrak's Phase 3 scheme, which was used through the 1980s and in to the mid-1990s, is by far my favorite of all of Amtrak's schemes. So, it probably comes as no surprise that the Phase 3 Heritage Unit is my favorite! I would absolutely love to see Amtrak apply this scheme to its fleet once again.

It is not too often that you can find this light for the westbound Zephyr! But when it is running seven hour late, this is the great light you get just west of Leyden. The Denver skyline is off to the right. Note that AMTK 145, the Phase 3 Heritage Unit, is in the consist!

A BNSF freight train broke a drawbar ahead of the Zephyr west of Burlington, IA the day before and it took nearly five hours for BNSF to get the train out of the way! Between that and a few other "typical" delays, the Zephyr is now heading west out of Denver nearly seven hours late!

The day is starting off overcast, but the clouds are thin enough to the east to provide for a spectacular sunrise. The Winter Park Express is west of Leyden, approaching a clear signal at MP 14.5. The Denver skyline stands somewhat silhouetted in the distance.

A variety of factors has caused the Westbound Zephyr to be anywhere from 2-5 hours late the last week or so. This particular Zephyr departed Chicago about an hour late as it had to pick up Superliners for the Winter Park Express (the new Ski Train). It also ended up having an SD70MAC added in the midwest. With a top speed of 70 MPH, that also slowed the train down a bit. Then, the SD70MAC was removed in Denver, along with the Superliners. All told, the train is running about 3 1/2 hours late in this shot near the east end of Barbara's Gulch.

It is an interesting mix of blue sky and clouds (and snow) as a westbound BNSF manifest moves at track speed. Almost as interesting as the weather is the power on the train. A New Image ES44DC, a Heritage 2 C44-9W, and a Heritage "Goat Boat" C44-9W lead up the train west.
