A variety of factors has caused the Westbound Zephyr to be anywhere from 2-5 hours late the last week or so. This particular Zephyr departed Chicago about an hour late as it had to pick up Superliners for the Winter Park Express (the new Ski Train). It also ended up having an SD70MAC added in the midwest. With a top speed of 70 MPH, that also slowed the train down a bit. Then, the SD70MAC was removed in Denver, along with the Superliners. All told, the train is running about 3 1/2 hours late in this shot near the east end of Barbara's Gulch.

The Zephyr has nine Superliners (including four coaches, a lounge, a diner, and three sleepers) on this day. Not bad, considering winter is typically the slow season for Amtrak. It's not uncommon for the Zephyr to only have 6 or 7 Superliners this time of year. The train is about to knock down a clear signal in Barbara's Gulch, east of Rocky.

Afternoon winter lighting calls for high contrast black and white! An eastbound Provo-Lincoln manifest slowly rolls along in the siding at Leyden. The Grand Junction based crew does not have enough time remaining to make it in to Denver, so a relief crew will greet the train at the east end of Leyden.

A matched set of Evolution Series GEs leads an eastbound manifest on the siding at Leyden. The train is a good length and, as is generally the case with BNSF trains on the Moffat, it is primarily composed of tank cars.

It's a beautiful, clear January day as a matched set of ES44s (well, technically an ES44AC sandwiched in between two ES44C4s) roll slowly through the siding at Leyden. As you can see based on the sign to the right, main track speed limit is 45 MPH at this spot.
