This eastbound manifest is about to knock down the signal at the west end of Leyden and head into the siding. DS-86 informed the train that BNSF's 31st Street Yard is not ready for the train, so they'll have to wait at Leyden until the yard can take them.

New ties waiting to be installed lay along the right-of-way as an eastbound BNSF manifest (with a UP power-sharing unit) rolls by. These ties will likely be installed during the upcoming eight day closure of the Moffat, which starts October 1st.

An eastbound BNSF Provo-Denver manifest, with a boat load of power, is headed toward Leyden on a rainy September morning. The train has 11 units on the head end, although only the first three units are actually online. The trailing eight units are DIC (Dead In Consist).

With clear signals set up for the rest of the run in to Denver, this eastbound BNSF officer's special moves quickly along CO-72 about 3/4 of a mile west of Leyden. Shorter days are making for less and less sun on the north side of shots like this.

A maintenance crew (including a work train) are working between Utah Jct and Arvada to lay new ballast and replace ties, so DS-86 had nowhere to send this manifest, instead holding it west of Leyden. Within an hour, the train would receive a clear signal to continue into North Yard.

A different perspective west of Leyden...this manifest is stopped on the main, looking at a red signal. I would sure like this shot more if those couple trees that are largely blocking the power weren't there, but it is still a nice view point.

Not the sunny side of the train, but that's okay! A good look at the 22 car train that original on the Craig Branch in Phippsburg overnight. Due to maintenance, DS-86 has the train holding here, looking at a red signal at the west switch of Leyden.

Earlier this week, a UP crew erected this new radio pole at the intermediate signal at milepost 14.5. I suspect it is related to PTC (Postive Train Control), but I am not certain. There is a similar pole at West Leyden that also just went up.

Two AC4400CWs, an ES44AC, and an SD70ACe take this eastbound P-Burg Local down the main west of Leyden. A beautiful day in the Denver-Metro with a high temperature right around 70°F.

Always nice catching a UP manifest on the Moffat. This train is actually the Phippsburg Local, which originated in Phippsburg, CO overnight. Interestingly, the train left P-Burg with a crew based out of P-Burg. Typically, a Denver-based crew in Yampa (an away terminal) would just take the train east. The P-Burg crew took the train as far as Kremmling. There, a van arrived from Denver with a Denver-based crew. The left number board (as you look at the train in the shot) is a little interesting as it is black-on-white whereas the right number board is the standard white on black.

An eastbound UP manifest slowly passes by an Approach (yellow) signal at the intermediate signal at milepost 14.5. This particular train was a bit of a lucky catch on my part. It is the MPHNYX, also known as the Phippsburg Local...the only non-coal train that still runs on the Craig Branch. It only runs once every 3-4 weeks, as needed, depending on the customers on the branch.

The eastbound Zephyr at 2pm...5 hours early? Alas, no...the Zephyr is running just over 20 hours late as it approaches the west switch of Leyden. The delay was entirely out of Amtrak's hands. Weather in California and Nevada has been making it difficult in the extreme for UP to keep trains moving.

The trailing DPU of an eastbound coal load glides away from the photographer as the Denver skyline stands tall in the distance. There is an increasing feeling each day that a shot of an eastbound coal load on the Moffat might just be the last such shot. Granted we are not that close to the extinction of Colorado coal quite yet, but it has been dropping off extraordinarily fast!

An SD70ACe serves as one of the mid-train swing helpers in this eastbound coal load. Upon reaching the Pecos Street Crossover, it (along with its two sisters) will be cut out of the train. The train will then be reassembled and continue east on the KP. Considering there currently is not a single coal empty anywhere on UP's train lineup, these units will likely be assigned to whatever manifest they are next needed on out of Denver.

As GE's Tier-4 units are increasing in production, more of them are appearing in Colorado. Granted they still are rather rare...I think this is the first time I've seen an ET44AH as a mid-train swing helper on a coal train.
