Good to see an empty oil train on the Moffat after multiple weeks without any. Even better to see one with such amazing power on the point! There was concern that UP might decide to throw a unit (most likely UP) on the point of the train in Denver. However, that obviously turned out not to be the case.

This was a nice surprise for a Saturday afternoon! Not only did a westbound (empty) oil train run on the Moffat, but it was led by a pair of Kansas City Southern "Retro Belles"! Both SD70ACes to boot. Haven't seen an oil train in weeks (if not months). With oil prices so low right now, the demand for oil from fracking just hasn't been that high.

This unit was once an AC6000CW and sported a 16 cylinder prime mover with 6000 HP. When the high horsepower craze of late 1990s and early 2000s died off, UP converted their AC6000CWs to basically just be AC4400CWs with 12 cylinders and 4400 HP. This is denoted in the units designation on the cab, "C44/60AC".

Moving along at the maximum authorized speed for a train running on yellows (as it is following the MNYRO), the MNYPHX glides by the with Welton Reservoir in the background.

I've been taking advantage of getting some pictures of trains leaving Leyden from this spot in Arvada's new Leyden Rock development. I won't be able to get these shots much longer as I'm standing on dirt that will likely become somebody's living room in a few months! Anybody looking to buy? Great location of trains such as UP's North Yard to Phippsburg manifest.

Right on the heels of the MNYRO (literally running on yellow signals) was this UP manifest. Three units and 11 cars! The train is essentially a "long local". It is the MNYPHX (Manifest, North Yard to Phippsburg, Extra). It is one of the few trains to use the Craig Branch anymore. The cars are destined for industries in the Steamboat Springs and Craig area. The third unit is putting on quite a show in the early morning light, just west of Leyden.

This westbound BNSF manifest is about to pass the switch to Chem Spur. A spur that hasn't been used in over two years now! Mesa Oil used to be located on the spur and take delivery of tanks from UP's West Local. However, Mesa Oil moved to a new location in Denver and is now served by the Denver Rocky Island. Nobody else has moved in to the facility, so who knows if the spur will ever be used again...

This is a scene that has changed quite a bit in the last two years! The city of Arvada annexed land from Jefferson County on the south side of the tracks west of Leyden. Two new subdivisions (Leyden Ranch and Leyden Rock) are being built. Phase 2 of Leyden Rocky is visible in this shot between the westbound BNSF manifest and the Denver skyline.

A westbound BNSF manifest, with 70-80 cars in tow, makes its way west toward the east entrance of Barbara's Gulch. While the temperature wasn't too bad (around 40°F), the wind was blowing at 35 MPH. So the wind chill was definitely a factor.

You may notice some evidence that this SD60M has been hanging around in storage in an urban area for awhile! It has been stored at Burnham for quite some time and "taggers" have taken advantage. With Burnham closing nine days after this picture was taken, this is one of the last units being moved from Burnham to Grand Junction for storage. Hopefully the more rural location will decrease the likelihood of additional tagging.

Roughly 18 months prior to this picture, when there was a major upturn in the railroad economy, UP brought a lot of SD60Ms out of storage and activated them to help move the tonnage. Funny how quickly things change. At this point, railroads are experiencing a significant decline in traffic and all those SD60Ms have gone right back into storage. This particular SD60M is on its way from Burnham to Grand Junction.

UP has a lot of leased power - particularly GP40-2s and GP38-2s - that it has used for switching in yards. One such example is this colorful GATX GP38-2. However, it might be a little while before this guy is doing any switching! It is on its way for storage in Grand Junction.

It looks to me like UP 4641 may have received a new cab not long ago. It looks distinctly more yellow than the rest of the unit. Perhaps it was just washed really well or possibly even repainted, but a new cab is also a definite possibility.

The sound this all-EMD made west of Leyden was music to my ears. Having been raised on Rio Grande, I'm certainly biased towards EMD. A trio of SD70s (one ACe and two Ms) and two units that are headed for storage in Grand Junction lead up the daily MNYRO.

Not sure if it is the result of Burnham (which has been primarily a GE shop for the last 15 years) closing or if there are other reasons, but there have been far more EMDs on the Moffat on UP trains lately. Case-in-point is this MNYRO which has a solid consist of five EMDs. Granted, only three of them are online. the last two are DIC (Dead In Consist) and are headed for storage in Grand Junction.
