A westbound BNSF manifest, with 70-80 cars in tow, makes its way west toward the east entrance of Barbara's Gulch. While the temperature wasn't too bad (around 40°F), the wind was blowing at 35 MPH. So the wind chill was definitely a factor.

This is a scene that has changed quite a bit in the last two years! The city of Arvada annexed land from Jefferson County on the south side of the tracks west of Leyden. Two new subdivisions (Leyden Ranch and Leyden Rock) are being built. Phase 2 of Leyden Rocky is visible in this shot between the westbound BNSF manifest and the Denver skyline.

This westbound BNSF manifest is about to pass the switch to Chem Spur. A spur that hasn't been used in over two years now! Mesa Oil used to be located on the spur and take delivery of tanks from UP's West Local. However, Mesa Oil moved to a new location in Denver and is now served by the Denver Rocky Island. Nobody else has moved in to the facility, so who knows if the spur will ever be used again...

30 years ago, Leyden would have been considered to be in a bit of a rural area. Today, however, it is very suburban! There are houses on both the north side and south side, as well as new houses being built to the west. I still love this shot looking straight down the siding to the west end, as an eastbound BNSF manifest (with 97 cars) approaches.

After seeing several extremely short manifests in the past couple of days, it was great to see a nice, long manifest. This BNSF Provo-Denver had 97 cars to go along with the four units (in a 3x1 configuration). Just above the cab of the lead unit is Ralston Valley High School. This is the newest high school, although it has been nearly 20 years since it opened.

It's been a couple of months since I'd seen one of these CitiRail leasers. About 18 months ago, when railroads could not keep up with all the rail traffic, BNSF leased 100 of these ES44ACs. Now that rail traffic has dropped off, units are going in to storage left and right.

A single ES44C4 bring up the tail end of the Provo-Denver trackage rights manifest at Leyden. The BNSF manifests that run on the Moffat are generally dominated by tank cars and this one is no exception.
