Winter may make for cold temperatures and bad driving conditions, but it also makes for some of the best train photography! The second (Friday) run of the Winter Park Express was a bit delayed getting out of town. Which worked out perfect for me as I had just dropped off kids at school and was on my way home when it showed up!

A break in the clouds showed up just as the mid-train swing helpers, including UP 1996, rolled by the intermediate signal just west of Leyden.

Clouds move in and out of the scene at the intermediate signal west of Leyden. Fortunately, sun is shining on the five units leading this eastbound coal load.

Along CO-72 west of Leyden, UP 1989 brings up the tail end of a westbound coal empty that will run over a good portion of the (former) Grande. The train is destined to load at the Savage load out on CV Spur near Price, UT.

A westbound coal empty headed for the Savage load out near Price, UT. The train held at Leyden for a little while as UP 8186 would not load. The crew reset the fault causing it to not load, but was unable to keep the fault clear, and the unit stopped loading again soon after this shot. The train would ultimately take the siding at Rocky to further troubleshoot the problem.

I always enjoy the symmetry that a telephoto shot of a unit train provides. Case-in-point is this unit tank train, which is headed for a transload facility near Price, UT.

BNSF 8496 and BNSF 9052, both SD70ACes, lead a westbound oil train near Welton Reservoir in Arvada. The train has a buffer car at the front and at the end. Buffer cars, frequently hoppers, are appropriately named they are used to provide a buffer between the power (and the crew) and the typically hazardous cargo.

A empty oil train, which will likely be loaded at Wash near Price, UT, heads west out of Leyden. The train has a pair of SD70ACes for power. Nice site in this day when GE dominates, particularly on BNSF.

About a decade ago, when SD70ACes were the latest and greatest power, it was highly rare to find one on the Moffat. The former Grande had become a reliable GE staple. However, as time has drawn on, that tend has largely disappeared and it is now quite common to find EMD power on the Moffat again. Such is the case here as an SD70ACe leads two GEs on a light power move west at MP 14.5.

While it certainly is no secret that Colorado coal has radically diminished in the past decade, it hasn't completely disappeared. Energy Mine on the Craig Branch and West Elk Mine on the North Fork Branch both still load trains. And these trains still need to help to conquer the 2% grades on the journey east. As such, a light power move was sent out of North Yard for Grand Junction on this Saturday.

The final MRONY rolls in to the history books as it heads toward Leyden and, not far beyond, North Yard. As of the date of this picture, this is set to be the final manifest train that UP will run between Roper Yard in Salt Lake City and North Yard in Denver...the west and east end points of the former Rio Grande.

UP has received around 90 SD70ACe-T4s from EMD. These units are Tier-4 emissions compliant, but there might be a problem. It would seem that UP is starting to put many of the new units in to long term storage. The exact reason is not known. Is it possible that EMD has not yet worked out the bugs in its Tier-4 hardware for the units to be reliable enough for use?

The final MRONY passes the intermediate signal at MP 14.5 as it heads toward North Yard. The train arrived at Bond at 2:45am, and I was worried I would not be able to get any shots of it. As luck would have it (for me), the train did not depart Bond until nearly 6am, giving ample time for the sun to come up and me to get out.

It is a chilly Thursday morning as light snow falls west of Denver. Moving at track speed, the westbound Zephyr kicks up a lot of snow as it cruises toward a clear intermediate signal at MP 14.5, just west of Leyden.

The Zephyr typically only has seven Superliners through most of the winter months as business tends to slow down. However, during the busiest travel week of the year, the Zephyr has nine Superliners today as the train heads west toward Barbara's Gulch. The train will stop briefly at Rocky to check on an issue with the second unit.
