On a sunny morning, the westbound Zephyr passes by the red Rocky Flats gas mask horse located on the north side of the tracks along CO-72. The Zephyr has a typical pair of P42DCs leading it on its journey west.

A Kansas City Southern SD70ACe add a little color to the Moffat as it leads a westbound coal empty west from Leyden. While the high temperature the previous day was 78°F, today the high barely reached 40°F as a wintery cold front moved in to the area.

A KCS SD70ACe leads a pair of UP AC4400CWs on a westbound coal empty just west of Leyden. The train will actually shoot past both the Craig Branch and the North Fork Branch and continue on it to Utah to near Price. There, it will load at the Savage load out on CV Spur.

About once per year (on average), UP runs an officer's special over the Moffat. A freezing October day in 2018 found such a special departing North Yard at 0800 sharp, headed west. Here, the train is west of Leyden with UP 1943 on the point just 20 minutes after departing the North Yard storage yard.

UP 1943, Union Pacific's SD70ACe painted in honor of the Armed Forces, leads an officer's special west on the Moffat on a chilly and overcast October morning. The train will spend the night in Grand Junction and will return to Denver tomorrow.

This is a scene that has changed rather drastically over the course of the previous five years. Back in 2013, you would not have seen any houses in the shot. Now, however, the Arvada neighborhood of Leyden Rock has hundreds of houses on the south side of the tracks. A C44-9W leads an eastbound BNSF manifest on clear signals by the new neighborhood.

An eastbound BNSF manifest, totalling less than 30 cars, rolls east on the main just west of Leyden, parallel to CO-72. Interestingly, the train wound up with five units despite the relatively short train.

UP 1982 is the third of three units on a westbound coal empty just west of Leyden. The Screaming Eagle looks mighty fine in 2018, almost 40 years after the official end of Missouri Pacific.

For several weeks now, UP has kept this ES44C4 (leased from BNSF) and the MoPac Heritage unit running between the West Elk Mine in western Colorado and destinations east. Surprisingly, this is the fourth trip west to the mines!

I always enjoy capturing a nice roster shot of a C44-9W that still wears the original Heritage scheme. These units are often referred to as "Goat Boats". The "Goat" reference comes from the fact that this paint scheme is very close to Great Northern's paint scheme, and the logo for Great Northern included a goat. The "Boat" reference comes from the fact that GE unit were once referred to as "U-Boats" as they had a "U" designation in their models in the 1960s, 70s, and 80s.

An eastbound BNSF manifest has the three most recent paint schemes represented as it knocks down a clear signal at MP 14.5. The dispatcher is checking with the crew to see how long they have to work. The answer is 16:45, meaning they should have no problem making it in to the yard.

A single SD70ACe brings up the end of a 7,000-foot MRONY. The train is relatively light, considering its length, and only has four units on the point and this single DPU bringing up the rear end.

It is a beautiful Thursday for the first official day of Summer (and the longest day of the year) as this eastbound MRONY glides east toward Leyden under partly cloudy skies. The temperature is around 80°F, and the sun is high in the sky.

Four units lead a long eastbound MRONY toward Leyden on the first day of summer. The train is just over 7,000 feet long and is mostly made up of empties. A nice SD70ACe led the train from Roper in Salt Lake to North Yard in Denver.
